‘A really substantive jump’: The most powerful weight-loss drug ever tested has arrived<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

It’s stronger than both Wegovy and Mounjaro \u2013 and should be treated with extreme caution, say leading experts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retatrutide \u2013 otherwise known as \u2018Godzilla Ozempic\u2019, \u2018triple-G\u2019, \u2018GLP-3\u2019 or \u2018reta\u2019 \u2013 is here. And people can\u2019t get enough of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internet is full of users sharing their experiences with their new favourite peptide \u2013 progress updates on Reddit, advice on Instagram and explainers on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is it so popular? Well, retatrutide seems to shift fat extremely quickly. In clinical trials<\/a>, participants lost, on average, nearly 30 per cent of their body weight in 18 months, making it twice as strong as Wegovy, one of the current crop of weight-loss drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn a world of already huge weight loss, retatrutide looks to be a really substantive jump in efficacy,\u201d says Prof Giles Yeo, an obesity scientist at the University of Cambridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no surprise, then, that this powerful weight-loss jab has been met with such enthusiasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s just one catch: retatrutide hasn\u2019t been approved for use by any country\u2019s regulatory agency yet and, right now, can\u2019t be bought legally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the web celebrates the arrival of reta, here\u2019s why you shouldn\u2019t rush to join the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why retatrutide is already here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Have a quick scroll through social media and you\u2019d be forgiven for thinking that doctors have been prescribing retatrutide to anyone who wants it for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Reddit thread r\/Retatrutide<\/a> is full of one-, three- and even 12-month weight-loss journeys credited to the drug. For Yeo, these posts are a cause for alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs this real?\u201d he asks. \u201cHow the hell are they getting their hands on it? Is it a black market? And how do we even know it\u2019s retatrutide?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drug\u2019s manufacturer Eli Lilly states on its website<\/a>: \u201cRetatrutide has not been approved by any regulatory agency and is legally available only through Lilly\u2019s clinical trials. Anything sold to consumers outside of those trials is illegal, with no way to verify its safety, purity or dosing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that hasn\u2019t stopped vials of liquid labelled as retatrutide from being sold in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, an investigation by CBS News<\/a> from June 2026 found more than 120 websites that were selling or promoting retatrutide, including more than 50 clinics staffed by licensed medical professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, data from US poison control centres<\/a> (quoted in the CBS report) suggests a surge of cases attributed to drugs sold as retatrutide in the first four months of 2026, up 265 per cent compared to the last four months of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeo says: \u201cIf someone is selling you something called retatrutide, then either they\u2019ve stolen it or it\u2019s something else \u2013 both of which are dangerous. No one should be able to get access to these drugs at the moment, except in a trial-centre situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Simon Cork, a senior lecturer in physiology at Anglia Ruskin University, adds that these injectables may not be retatrutide at all, saying: \u201cIf you\u2019re buying a drug outside a very regulated market, you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re getting or what you\u2019re putting in your body.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, he continues, even if the drugs in question are<\/em> retatrutide, that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re safe to use. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what the side effects are until you\u2019ve tested it in a population,\u201d says Cork. \u201cWe just don\u2019t know what the risks are yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
