We made it the Car of the Year in our inaugural CAR magazine Genius Awards, and have been lucky enough to get an extensive amount of early access to this superb Neue Klasse showcase. It\u2019s not quite in UK dealers yet, but you can order one \u2013 and the starting price of \u00a353,005 is great value for money considering that nets you a 436bhp 50 xDrive variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only is it the poster child for BMW\u2019s new design direction, the second-generation i3 is a technological tour de force, incorporating the firm\u2019s latest innovations in infotainment and electronic architecture, as well as Gen 6 motor and battery tech. Claimed WLTP driving range is 567 miles per charge, thanks in part to 108kWh of battery capacity. The interior is roomy and very well made. The BMW iX3 is the i3 as an SUV \u2013 and it made it to market first, premiering BMW\u2019s Neue Klasse design direction and technology. We\u2019ve previously described it as a ‘seismic shift’ for 2026, as in addition to debuting that Gen 6 battery and motor sophistication, the iX3 has served as the vanguard for a whole cluster of new electric SUVs capable of around 500 miles of driving range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is still the cream of the crop \u2013 if you\u2019re a keen driver and must have an SUV. Key rivals are comfier, but not as dynamically entertaining; the i3, being a saloon, is that bit more effective if you value dynamics over practicality. But from its chinny looks to the wild interior, which incorporates some remarkably clever and user-friendly solutions within its avant-garde appearance, the iX3 is a game-changer that shouldn\u2019t be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volvo EX60<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If it\u2019s comfort you prefer, this is our top choice, coming out ahead of the similarly prioritised Mercedes-Benz GLC EV, which is still very good but has a rather intrusively deployed set of screens on the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Volvo, on the other hand, is serenity personified. The interior is spacious, minimalist and incredibly refined. It rides like melted butter, and the seats are fabulous. Renault is such a class act when it comes to electric cars that we could have included at least four of the current line-up on this page. But this time we\u2019ve restricted ourselves to two really outstanding examples that deliver not just brilliance but real joie de vivre as well. Starting with the smallest \u2013 the CAR Genius Award-winning Renault Twingo E-Tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Twingo may be limited to a driving range that starts with a one \u2013 officially its 163 miles WLTP \u2013 but with a promised sub-\u00a320k starting price and those cheeky looks, if you\u2019re in the market for an all-electric runabout, this is where we\u2019d start. You\u2019ll need a little patience, because it isn\u2019t quite officially on sale in the UK yet, but it\u2019s great to drive, comfortable and surprisingly practical for its size, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiat Grande Panda<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Can\u2019t wait for a Twingo? If it\u2019s cheeky charm you want, try this<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Want spacious room for four? Try the Hyundai Inster. Keen on cute Kei-car style looks? The Honda Super-N is for you? But if you can\u2019t wait for a Renault Twingo, we\u2019d check out the local Fiat dealer first \u2013 the Grande Panda has got charm and character by the bucketload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its low-cost platform favours comfort over sophistication; you\u2019re unlikely to get anywhere near the claimed 199-mile WLTP driving range, and let\u2019s not dwell on the fact that there\u2019s still no sign of a Euro NCAP test for any car using this set of underpinnings. But the Grande Panda is packed with quirky design details, uses interesting and eco-friendly materials, and is another EV that\u2019s impressively practical for its size. For as little as \u00a320,995, you\u2019re getting an interesting and capable compact electric car, perfect for bombing about in relaxed style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kia EV2<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kia has a now very well-established reputation for delivering great electric cars, and its newest and smallest \u2013 the EV2 \u2013 is perhaps the best yet. This is a little more expensive than other options at the compact end of the market, but in exchange, you get an eye-catching yet modern design that gives way to a space-efficient and modern interior \u2013 plus a comfortable ride and a much more versatile 281-mile WLTP driving range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best of all, the cheapest version \u2013 the \u00a324,245 Air with the larger 61kWh battery pack \u2013 gives you such a decent amount of kit for your money that you really don\u2019t need to spend any more. Thanks to being eligible for the maximum electric car grant, it even costs less than some of the smaller battery models. In short, this is an attractive, highly pragmatic EV at a good price, backed up by a seven-year warranty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renault 4 E-Tech Plein Sud<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Best choice for a compact electric family car with that little something extra<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As already discussed, Renault has plenty of excellent electric cars to choose from \u2013 the Renault 5 E-Tech and the Renault Scenic E-Tech are the pair that didn\u2019t quite make this list, but still very much worth checking out if they suit your needs. But our second Renault selection on this list is the Renault 4 Plein Sud \u2013 because why not go for the one that combines practicality with retro themes and then adds a fold-back canvas roof?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is yet another utterly delightful compact EV: comfortable yet composed, roomy in the back, and blessed by a huge boot. The interior is well put together, the tech all works, the design is cohesive, and the open-air-ability adds to the experience without interfering with the R4\u2019s fundamental usefulness. At \u00a327,445 (thanks to the maximum grant) and 243 miles WLTP, it\u2019s temptingly priced as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kia PV5 Passenger<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Forget a hatchback or an SUV, this is the best electric family car<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure, you could buy a Volkswagen ID.3 for similar money, but the Kia PV5 Passenger is a van-based electric people carrier with style and space galore. Not only that, however, because it\u2019s based on a variant of Hyundai-Kia\u2019s E-GMP components, it also drives better than plenty of more conventional rivals as well. You can have a five-seater or a seven-seater version; both deliver lounging room aplenty, but the five-seater naturally also has a truly massive boot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, so it\u2019s going to be less convenient to park sometimes. People might mistake you for a minicab. And the interior is relentlessly grey. But the PV5 really is a brilliant example of getting the fundamental aspects of passenger transport right. Think of it like an ID. Buzz but without the retro hangover and at just two-thirds of the cost \u2013 it\u2019s a cut above the Stellantis van brigade that comes at a similar price as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyundai Ioniq 6 N<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Best if you want a serious performance EV but don\u2019t have the budget for a Porsche<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of really, really fast electric cars around. But while a Taycan Turbo GT, an RS e-Tron GT or a top-spec Tesla have long been able to rearrange your insides the way mescaline can rearrange your head, it wasn\u2019t until Hyundai came along with the Ioniq 5 N that anyone began to seriously tackle the tricky business of making an EV actually involving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyundai then upped the ante even further with the introduction of its second electric N model. While the Ioniq 6 N may look a little try-hard, it offers the same huge power and the same gobsmackingly detailed pretend dual-clutch gearbox experience but with deeper sophistication and increased maturity. It rides better and feels less hair-trigger, as CAR\u2019s Piers Ward put it, resulting in an even more roundly appealing electric shock machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Porsche Cayenne Electric<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If money is no object, this is THE best electric SUV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Porsche Cayenne has never been a looker. And this new 100% electric version certainly isn\u2019t about to change our minds about that. But goodness gracious, it is a supreme tour de force when it comes to demonstrating the power and finesse available from the latest prestige EV powertrains. So much so that frankly, the base model is fast enough; the range-topping Cayenne Turbo is the Millennium Falcon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the electric Cayenne is about so much more than raw speed. The trick air suspension delivers incredible precision and poise in combination with limo-like comfort. The interior is tastefully laid out and every bit the bank vault clich\u00e9, with a curve to the central screen that will have you marvelling for a long time to come. It will even tow 3.5 tonnes. Just be careful that you don\u2019t get sucked too far into the \u2013 often extremely expensive \u2013 options list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Porsche Taycan E-Shift<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the Taycan we\u2019ve been looking for<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard to believe that where Hyundai leads, Porsche now follows \u2013 but it\u2019s taken until 2026 for the Stuttgart sports car firm to add a virtual gearbox option to its well-established Taycan EV. Thank goodness for patience and progress, though, because with the arrival of E-Shift, we suddenly no longer care about its historically patchy reliability concerns and scary depreciation \u2013 this is a fabulous upgrade for an already mightily capable electric car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Available as an option right across the range, though varied in its implementation to best suit each Taycan grade\u2019s character, E-Shift can be engaged in every existing driving mode and has been coded to behave like an artificial PDK. It instantly solves our issues with the unpredictable regen and adds a layer of involvement that feels so authentic it\u2019s hard to believe the engineers behind it slept at all during the development process. The Taycan is now a clear step above the Audi e-Tron GT, and perhaps the most multifaceted EV on sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electric<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our New Cars Editor, Ted Welford, reckons the new electric C-Class is \u2018potentially the best new Benz in years\u2019. For while it might not trouble the BMW i3 dynamically \u2013 nor for outright driving range \u2013 it\u2019s a brilliant expression of Mercedes\u2019 approach to the mainstream state of the art: comfortable to ride in, spacious to sit in (especially in the back), and more crammed full of screens than the local Currys PC World. On some models, the Hyperscreen on the dashboard measures almost 40 inches across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the front grille, you\u2019ll either love this or hate it. But the \u2018predictive\u2019 air suspension and convincing real-world efficiency are advances we can all happily get behind. The Hey Mercedes voice control works very effectively, and the rear seats are as roomy as those in an E-Class \u2013 although the C-Class Electric is almost as long as one of those now. An understandable alternative choice to the CAR award-winning BMW, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercedes-Benz GLB Electric<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A premium-grade compact seven-seater that\u2019s practical and keenly priced<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The smaller Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric saloon and the iX3-rivalling Mercedes-Benz GLC EV were certainly in contention for this list. But for our second three-pointed choice, we\u2019ve gone instead for the GLB Electric, which offers an uncommon blend of premium aspiration, seven-seater practicality and good value pricing. The replacement for the old EQB, it gets all the same tech upgrades as every other new-generation Mercedes EV but adds a degree of pragmatism not even many less prestigious mainstream alternatives can match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the GLB looks massive, it\u2019s shorter than a Skoda Kodiaq yet roomier for passengers inside, with plenty of neat touches throughout. The quiet refinement of the electric drivetrain is matched by comfortable suspension, and though the screens can feel overwhelming at first, they do give the car an ultra-modern, premium atmosphere that\u2019s a step above the competition. Costing less but going further than its less spacious predecessor, this is laudable progress indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polestar 5<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

News Editor Jake Groves reckons the Polestar 5 \u2013 now it\u2019s finally here \u2013 is truly a challenge to the well-established Porsche Taycan. It combines show-stopping looks with four-door practicality and stonking dual-motor performance. It features Polestar\u2019s newest bespoke platform, benefits from the increased strength of bonded aluminium construction, has claimed 50:50 weight distribution, and top-spec models use MagneRide suspension (remember that?). All the better for deploying up to 871bhp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brief was to create a comfortable cruiser that can still satisfy on a deserted Sunday drive \u2013 and Polestar\u2019s nailed it. All of the control weights are beautifully balanced, the variable regen (via paddles on the steering wheel) works well, and chassis combines suppleness with incision. Plus, it\u2019s \u2018quick with a capital F,\u2019 as Jake puts it. Still seems a bit weird that, like the Polestar 4, there\u2019s no rear window. But that\u2019s a small price to pay for one of the most well-balanced and measured EVs on sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyundai Ioniq 9<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Best if you want an electric SUV that can seat seven<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 is just that bit better than its Kia EV9 cousin. They both make maximum use of the impressive E-GMP underpinnings that are already so well proven by so many of Hyundai-Kia\u2019s electric cars. But the marginally newer Ioniq 9 packs in an even bigger 110.3kWh battery while offering a more cossetting ride. Advantages that we believe are more relevant to you if you\u2019re in the market for a large electric people mover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the looks perhaps aren\u2019t quite as dramatic as the EV9\u2019s, and it\u2019s still not a very efficient electric car, it delivers a vast amount of interior space. Power runs from 215bhp for the entry-level RWD model to 429bhp for the top spec dual-motor Performance AWD, while WLTP driving range tops out at 385 miles. Interior quality is good enough to challenge the \u00a373k-and-up Volvo EX90, yet the asking price begins at \u00a364,995. Like the Kia, you can have an even more luxurious six-seat layout, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Best if you want an electric estate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric estate cars are a minor niche \u2013 we suppose most people will buy an SUV instead these days \u2013 but we still love them, so it\u2019s worth celebrating the best here. And right now, that means the VW ID. 7 Tourer. This currently has the largest boot of any load-lugging EV to add to the accolades it already accumulates in hatchback form. Namely: outstanding amounts of comfort, space and driving range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boot, though. This gives buyers 605 litres to play with before lowering the rear seats, and that\u2019s measured up to the parcel shelf, so it’s actually a conservative measurement. Kick out those back-seat passengers, and you get 1714 litres of space. That\u2019s not just roomy enough for a fairly spendy trip to Ikea but a chunk more than the 570-litre BMW i5 Touring in maximum passenger configuration. The VW goes further than the BMW between charges, too, with up to 424 miles WLTP; the Audi A6 Avant e-Tron promises up to 437 miles, but its 502-litre boot doesn\u2019t cut it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
