Ive and good friend and fellow designer Marc Newson, with whom he founded the LoveFrom creative collective in 2019, have spent much of the last four years working on the interior and exterior design of the Luce, Ferrari’s long-awaited first electric car. And while the exterior remains a secret for now, the interior has been revealed.

Why such a radical approach for this car, of all cars? ‘Because we needed to do something disruptive,’ says Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna. ‘We wanted to do something new. Numbering fewer than 60 employees, its work – for brands as diverse as Moncler and Airbnb – is defined by Ive hallmarks: clarity of concept, purity of execution (the Bauhaus has long been an influence) and a hard-to-define sense of joy, even where the hardware’s sleek modernity might suggest there should be none.

He can, as you’d imagine given his success, pick and choose his projects. But it’s been rewarded with a cockpit like no other. What’s more, with no engine and no obvious client base, Ferrari EV’s has long felt more like an intellectual exercise than a car anyone might yearn to own. LoveFrom has changed that. LoveFrom’s trademark simplicity is here, wrought in the finest materials to immaculate tolerances, but this is also a love letter to the dying art of driving. Great shoals of Waymos may swim San Franciso’s streets, but the Luce’s cockpit is a space for those not yet ready to give up the wheel (a frankly beautiful three-spoke creation in cool, weighty aluminium).

As such, the Luce’s cockpit reflects a theme currently preoccupying Ive. ‘People are feeling increasingly disconnected from the physical world; more and more isolated,’ he says, conscious, you’d imagine, of the great contribution his own work has made to this societal shift. ‘We wanted to create something that reminds us we are physical and we want visceral and direct connections. Physical controls are ranged along the bottom of the panel. The volume knob and functions buttons are crafted from glass; just a couple this interior’s 40 or so glass parts. Flick the toggles and an animation confirms your increased fan speed or cabin temp, just as pushing ‘volume up’ on your iPhone shows a brief rising bar animation on the screen.

A U-turn on touch? But I’d never dream of using touch in a car. For me that’s just the wrong technology to be the primary interface here. We use some touch here but it’s very thoughtful. The majority of the interfaces are physical. Drop the bespoke glass key into its dock and, as you push it down, the yellow colour flows from the key across to the drive selector, a stubby lever with an expensive feeling glass knob and shift action of surprising and welcome heft. There’s joy too in the clock on the corner of the central touchscreen, which uses a physical button to cycle through three digital functions: timepiece, chronograph, compass. Like solving a videogame puzzle, there’s delight in instinctively understanding its workings. On this evidence we can expect simplicity, quality of execution and a refreshing rejection of fuss, together with further deft references to Ferrari’s uniquely spectacular back catalogue. That 79-year body of work, stuffed with masterpieces as it is, dooms each new Ferrari to take its place amongst scores of others unable to bear comparison with the likes of the 250 GTO or F40.
