Katie Holmes’ tell-all on toxic marriage to Tom Cruise

The actress is reportedly finally ready to spill the beans on the divorce that shocked Hollywood

It’s been 12 years since Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise shocked the showbiz world when they announced their split. While it was widely rumoured that Katie filed for divorce due to concerns over Tom’s devotion to Scientology, the former Hollywood “It” couple have never spoken in detail about their separation – up until now, that is.

According to reports, Katie – who was given sole custody of their daughter Suri, with Tom agreeing to pay the actress $400,000 a year until she turned 18 – could be gearing up to do a tell-all interview now that she’s free of the custodial agreement.

US sources have claimed that, since Suri’s 18th birthday in April, Katie has been inundated with “mind-blowing” offers to reveal all – and she apparently has “a lot to say”. An insider said, “Now that Suri is dealing with her dad directly, everything’s changed for Katie. Although, she’s still unnerved by the thought of doing an interview about things that even privately she’s been unable to fully talk about.”

It’s thought that Katie, 45, could choose Oprah Winfrey to do the explosive sit-down chat with, which would certainly be a stark contrast to when Tom, 62, spoke to the host in 2005. During the infamous interview, the actor – who was there to talk about his upcoming movie, War of the Worlds – jumped on the couch and declared his love for Katie to the world.

The couple went on to tie the knot in 2006 in a lavish ceremony in Italy, but it all came to an end in 2012 after nearly six years of marriage. In a joint statement, they said, “We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.”

Katie moved to New York with Suri, and with the help of her lawyer dad, Martin Holmes, she filed for divorce. It’s reported that she deliberately chose New York as family judges tend not to grant joint custody to warring parents.

Rumours soon surfaced that Katie, who moved to New York with Suri, had chosen to end the marriage because of Scientology. Tom later confessed that the controversial religion had played a part in the split, with reports that Katie didn’t want their daughter to be raised as a Scientologist. It’s also believed that Katie signed an NDA, forbidding her from discussing her experiences within the Church Scientology and their relationship.

While Tom has maintained a relationship with his older children Bella, 31, and Connor, 29, who he adopted with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, 57, and who are both members of Scientology, it’s reported that he’s barely had contact with Suri. Although he previously hit back at suggestions he “abandoned” his daughter, there has been little evidence to suggest they’ve had any involvement in each other’s lives.

And in June, it was revealed that Suri had dropped his surname. Starring in a theatre production of the musical Head Over Heels, the teen was listed in the show’s programme as “Suri Noelle” – her mum’s middle name.

A source told us at the time that Suri has taken steps to publicly disassociate herself from her famous dad, leaving him wracked with guilt over how things have panned out. “Tom insists that he hasn’t completely shut Suri out of his life. He does get updates from time to time, but it’s a very sensitive subject. He’s been biding his time for the wounds to heal and for his chance to nurture that relationship again, which is what he had intended to do when she turned 18. The truth is he’s never given up on building a relationship with his daughter,” they said.

If Katie was to do an interview, despite NDAs being place, she certainly wouldn’t be short of things to talk about. While she has embarked on some low-key romances over the years, and aside from her six-year relationship with actor Jamie Foxx, sources previously revealed that she never quite recovered from her marriage to Tom.

“Katie is still dealing with the emotional fallout from her marriage to Tom,” an insider previously told us. “He did such a number on her self-esteem, her ability to trust men, even on her ability to trust herself and her intuition. Plus, even when she finally had the courage to pull the plug, it was so harrowing to escape him. It’s no exaggeration to say she’d rather be single for the rest of her life than wind up with another guy like Tom. He was so controlling – she totally lost herself in that relationship and it took her years to recover. To this day, it still haunts her and it makes her afraid that, with one wrong choice, she could end up in the same sort of toxic relationship all over again.”

Katie dated Jamie, 56, from 2013 to 2019, with the pair largely keeping their relationship private. Despite romance rumours first circulating in 2013, it wasn’t until 2015 that those rumours were confirmed. They were then spotted together looking loved-up in 2018, before finally making their red carpet debut together at the Met Gala in 2019.

However, they called it quits not long after, with sources saying they were both too focused on their own families and careers to fully commit to one another. Katie went on to date restaurateur Emilio Vitolo from 2020 to 2021, but reportedly decided they’d be better off as friends. More recently, she was linked to Bobby Wooten, but they split in December 2022 after eight months together, with insiders saying that Suri was Katie’s priority.

The source added, “The scars that Tom left her with still haven’t fully healed. Katie isn’t totally shut off to love. If an opportunity comes her way, she embraces it, and she’s proven that a couple of times with Jamie and Emilio, among others. But there’s no denying that she’s wary of trusting her heart to anyone again. She’d love to meet the right guy, but she has a big wall up. Men will always come second to her daughter, and she sees nothing wrong with that.”
