Meghan’s ambitions to recruit shock new powerful ally

The Duchess of Sussex is reportedly hoping a friendship could boost both her career and reputation

She’s sparked rumours for years that she could be dipping her toes into politics after previously speaking out about her views.

And now, in trying to recruit a new ally, Meghan Markle has dropped the biggest hint yet that she’s entering the political world with sources revealing that she’s attempting to grow closer to US Vice President Kamala Harris – who recently joined the race to beat Donald Trump to the White House following Joe Biden’s shock withdrawal.

“Everyone knows Meghan is very fond of Joe and Jill. She supported them right until Joe stepped down and would have been behind them all the way through if he’d kept going. But her bond with Kamala is stronger, they have more in common as empowered women, and Meghan’s in awe of what she’s accomplished. She respects her so much and the way she’s fought her way to the top in a man’s world,” an insider tells Closer.

“Kamala has always been such a huge and vocal supporter of her as well, so there’s a real connection between them that’s only going to get stronger now if Meghan has her way. It’s no secret Meghan would love to get involved in politics in some form, so having someone who’s an ally and kindred spirit in the White House couldn’t be a better scenario.”

The source adds that the Duchess is also “desperate to avoid the nightmare of having Trump in power”, which would be a “serious threat” to Prince Harry’s visa. The former President recently stated Harry “would be on his own” if he gets re-elected, saying, “I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable.”

After stepping down from royal duties – meaning they no longer had to remain impartial about their political stance – Meghan, 42, and Harry, 39, released a video urging voters to sign up and reject misinformation during the 2020 presidential election.
Meghan called it the “most important election of our lifetime”, while Harry said, “This election I am not able to vote in the US. But many of you may not know that I haven’t been able to vote in the UK my entire life. As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.”

At the time, Meghan also publicly endorsed Kamala as she sat down with Gloria Steinem to discuss women in politics. Praising Kamala, who is of Jamaican and Indian descent, she said, “I’m so excited to see that kind of representation. You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity.”

She added, “As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see. And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we’re starting to break-through in a different way.”

Kamala, 59, has also spoken out in support of Meghan. In 2019, she shared a video where she opened up about her mental health during her pregnancy, and wrote alongside, “This is incredibly important. We must remember that it’s a sign of strength to show emotion. Meghan, we are with you.”

And in 2020, she reposted a virtual speech that Meghan gave to her high school’s graduating class, in which she discussed racism and police brutality. “The only wrong thing to say is to say nothing. Thank you, Meghan, for this powerful statement,” Kamala said.

While a close friendship with Kamala would no doubt boost Meghan’s career, our source says she’s hoping it could help re-build her reputation, too.

“Kamala’s popularity amongst the Hollywood elite is a huge bonus as far as Meghan’s concerned because she’s convinced it can only work in her favour and get her a lot more facetime with the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Beyonce, and hopefully get things back on track between her and Harry and the Clooneys. She’s seeing a win for Kamala as her ticket to ride,” the insider explains.

“It will be pretty sweet revenge for Meghan to have her critics see her aligned with the most powerful woman in America. People have tried to paint this picture of her being just as unpopular in the US as she is in the UK and clearly that can’t be said if she’s tight with the commander in chief of the country. There’s really no better proof of her firm social standing. Meghan does a good job of acting as though the criticism doesn’t get to her, but of course she’ll love the taste of proving people wrong with this power-alliance.

“Obviously, this is about way more than just getting one over on the naysayers, Meghan’s deeply invested in the future of her country and believes wholeheartedly that Kamala has what it takes to lead the nation into better days. She’s thrilled to see the polls swinging in Kamala’s favour and there’s zero doubt in her mind that she’s going to make a magnificent president. Regardless of what happens, the fact that she’s in this race is such a boost for women and for people of colour, having this sort of representation means so much. “

Earlier this year, Meghan and Harry waded into politics once again as they joined a campaign to warn people against misinformation in the upcoming election. According to reports at the time, their Archewell Foundation was supporting an initiative to prepare US voters for a possible onslaught of AI deepfake information.

And our source adds that the couple are now throwing their full support behind Kamala. “Meghan has made it clear to Kamala that she’s got her unwavering support and can count on her for whatever she needs, that she and Harry are behind her all the way. They both have such respect for Kamala’s track record politically, for what she’s done as a prosecutor and for her as a person,” they said.

“Meghan’s very keen to find out how she can help when Kamala hits the campaign trail. Everyone’s predicting Meghan will be front and centre at whatever fundraisers happen on the West Coast and it won’t surprise anyone if she also shows up on the East Coast to lend a hand. She’s wild about Kamala and really eager to get involved. No doubt the fringe benefit of having the endorsement of the future president is a draw too, Meghan’s got plenty of ambitions of her own so a relationship with Kamala can only benefit her.”
