Why Katie Holmes hit back at Tom Cruise trust fund claims

She’s finally ready to reclaim her voice and narrative in the public eye

Katie Holmes may be a famously private person, but she made a very public statement last week, declaring she’d had “enough” of the stories written about her daughter Suri’s finances.

Taking to Instagram, the actress posted a screenshot of a Daily Mail article carrying the headline, “Suri Cruise the millionaire! Tom Cruise’s trust fund has ‘kicked in’ and mom Katie Holmes has one for her too” – overlaying the piece with her own words: “Completely false…Daily Mail you can stop making things up.” She accompanied the post with a one-worded caption: “enough”.

Now, fans are reading between the lines – and taking this as the biggest sign yet that, now that Suri is 18, her estranged father is no longer financially supporting her. The question has been a source of great debate, ever since Suri’s milestone birthday in April. Up until then, it was understood that Tom had been paying child support to Katie of $400k (or £318k) per year, plus all expenses, including medical and educational costs, but nothing has since been confirmed as to whether he’s continued to pay out since no longer being financially liable.

The fact that Katie, 45, uncharacteristically lashed out at reports that Suri was, in fact, still benefitting hugely from Tom’s vast wealth (which is estimated at $600m) is – by all accounts – the clearest sign yet that neither she nor her daughter have any strings still attached to the man who’s ostensibly played no real part in their lives for years. At a time of great transition for both Katie and Suri, her message resounds clearly.

Rewinding 18 years, Katie was just as happy to publicly gush about her relationship as Tom – who infamously platformed their love story on red carpets, in interviews and, of course, on Oprah’s sofa. The couple wed in fairytale wedding ceremony in Italy in 2006 – with every move documented for the world to see. They were equally unreserved when it came to Suri, proudly introducing her to the world as a baby on the front cover of Vanity Fair. Speaking in the accompanying interview, Katie gushed, “The moment the doctor handed me Suri, I was just ready. The feeling is indescribable. All I can say is the moment I looked in her eyes, I felt like…Mom.”

However, it was her strong maternal instincts that ultimately made Katie change her tune, and end her marriage. As history tells it, the former Dawsons Creek star became concerned over Tom’s devotion to Scientology, and the pseudo-religion’s stronghold over their lives – something Tom himself later confirmed in an interview. The couple split in 2012 and completed their divorce quickly, with Katie awarded full custody and child support of $400k every year, up until Suri turned 18. She was also granted permission to move with Suri to New York, where they have since lived in relative privacy. But according to insiders, part of the divorce deal was that Katie was banned from ever speaking about Scientology publicly, nor even discussing her and Tom’s relationship. What’s more, it’s rumoured she was forbidden from dating in the public eye for at least five years – which might explain why she’s been so private in her romantic life ever since, only going public with her six-year relationship with Jamie Foxx, which ended in 2019, towards the end.

As for Tom, he’s previously slammed reports he’s no longer involved in Suri’s life – even suing a magazine in 2013 for claiming he’d “abandoned” his daughter. But that was the last year he was ever pictured with her and, over a decade later, it’s believed they no longer play any role in each other’s lives.

Indeed, in what has been a pivotal year for Suri, who turned 18 and also graduated from high school last summer, she herself has made it clear that she no longer wishes to be associated with her very famous father. Not only did she decide to name herself “Suri Noelle” in the theatre programme for a school play she was in earlier this year, she also adopted her mum’s middle name, Noelle, as her own surname during her high school graduation. This has been the biggest statement she’s made so far as to the state of her relationship with Tom.

But Katie’s decision last week to refute claims that Suri is cashing in on her father’s fortune took her and her daughter’s estrangement from Tom to the next level. And it’s no surprise, considering all the speculation that’s been surrounding his continued involvement now that Suri’s reached adulthood. One source of interest has been whether he’s paying her college tuition fees, now that she’s in her first year at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Some insiders say he’s covering all costs, while others report he made his last financial contribution the month she turned 18. Either way, it seems Katie wants the public to know that any claims that Suri is a millionaire all thanks to Tom and his so-called trust fund are seriously inflated.

As Closer has previously reported, Katie’s been ostensibly living in the shadow of her former marriage for the past 18 years, quietly taking on acting work while focusing on her daughter’s safety and privacy. But, now that Suri’s moved out, it seems the actress has reclaimed her voice and narrative. She’s currently winning rave reviews for her performance in Our Town on Broadway and has also been busy on the promotional trail. She hasn’t publicly spoken about Tom, but the implication is that she’s finally ready to be back in the spotlight. According to a source close to the star, it’s been a long time coming.

“Katie is still dealing with the emotional fallout from her marriage to Tom,” we’re told. “He did such a number on her self-esteem, her ability to trust men, even on her ability to trust herself and her intuition. Plus, even when she finally had the courage to pull the plug, it was so harrowing to escape him. He was so controlling – she totally lost herself in that relationship and it took her years to recover.”

Now that she has, ostensibly, recovered, it’s clear that actress is no longer willing to sit back and take any false stories being written about her, or her and Suri’s so-called dependence on Tom. So, she’s speaking out, hitting back, and saying – once and for all – that enough is “enough”.
