Was this the ‘most offensive’ thing ever to happen at the Oscars?

The Academy Awards celebrate the world’s greatest acting talent in prestigious style – but it seems like some of them need teaching some manners!

It’s supposed to be a night with the stars that oozes glitz, glamour and the very peak of A-list sophistication.
But Adrien Brody appeared to take the shine off the event after being spotted spitting his chewing gum out on his way to the podium to collect his Best Actor gong – and throwing it for his girlfriend Georgina Chapman to catch.
‘Sickening’, ‘disgusting’ and ‘the most offensive thing I’ve seen’ were just some of the reactions on social media to his gesture, with one irate viewer even calling for Brody to be ‘arrested for hurling his gum’.
As if that wasn’t enough, he was also seen locking lips with actress Halle Berry on the red carpet after the Monster’s Ball star moved in on him, announcing, ‘Sorry Georgina but I’ve gotta do it’, leaving Adrien’s rather awkward-looking partner watching on as they smooched.
And in a final ‘oh no’ moment, Adrien even appeared to giving Oscars crew a telling off after his lengthy speech was interrupted by music to play him out, with the actor snapping, ‘I’m wrapping up, please turn the music off. I’ve done this before – it’s not my first rodeo!’

But it wasn’t all bad. His speech – which provoked jokes on social media as being almost as long as his movie The Brutalist – took a sweet turn when he spoke touchingly of his romance with Georgina – whose ex-husband is shamed movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
Adrien, 51, even spoke of how Georgina’s two children from her decade-long marriage to Weinstein now refer to him as ‘Popsy’.
Revealing how he wanted to share the award with Georgina, saying she’d ‘reinvigorated his sense of self-worth’, he told the audience, ‘Our beautiful children, Dash and India. I know this is — it’s been a rollercoaster but thank you for accepting me into your life. And Popsy is coming home a winner!’
Adrien’s romance with British fashion designer Georgina, 48, began in 2019, just two years after she divorced Weinstein following a shocking list of his sex crimes were exposed which led to him being convicted of rape and sexual assault in 2020. He’s been in jail ever since and faces a retrial on some of the charges against him in April.
When the appalling details of his crimes first emerged in 2017 – which led to the MeToo movement – Georgina didn’t go out in public for several months and her upmarket fashion brand, Marchesa, was widely speculated to suffer from the fallout of her husband’s crimes.
Speaking the following year, she told Vogue, ‘It was like all the air had been punched out of my lungs. There was part of me that was terribly naive – clearly, so naive. I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, and I have moments of disbelief! And I have moments when I just cry for my children.’

Georgina and Adrien were thrown together in 2019 at a fashion launch hosted by supermodel Helena Christensen. When they bumped into each other later that year on a trip with mutual friends, they discovered they shared a birthday. Georgina later said, ‘So the first evening we had a joint birthday party, blowing out candles together, and weirdly we even had almost matching outfits, we were wearing the same print.’
It was only in June 2021 that the couple were finally pictured together in public, at the Tribeca Film Festival, with the cameras later catching their first PDA at the Cannes Film Festival.
Since then, the love story has continued to blossom and their careers have entered a new phase of success. Marchesa is booming and estimated revenue is now around $40m a year. Meanwhile, Adrien’s never been more in demand and, despite feeling he’d lost his way in the past he’s bounced back, something he credits to Georgina. The Best Performance winner told her at this year’s Golden Globes in January, ‘I would not be standing here before you if it wasn’t for you. There was a time not too long ago where I thought this might not be afforded to me again, so thank you.’
Away from the limelight, the couple live a quiet life in Georgina’s idyllic farmhouse in upstate New York, sharing it with her children, her journalist mum Caroline Wonfor – and a menagerie of pets including ponies, dogs, cats and chickens.
She recently gave an insight into their life out of the glare of publicity in an interview and revealed how Adrien is ‘very sensitive’ and ‘has a thin vein emotionally with the world’.  Describing how he’s most likely to be found working in the art studio at their countryside home, she added, ‘If he’s in the midst of inhabiting a role, he’s up in the office, reading, covered in cats!’
