Humiliated Jennifer Lopez is having her worst year ever – and only Ben can save her

As her latest album and movies fail to impress critics, Jennifer is turning to her husband to get her career back on track

The 54-year-old released her first album in 10 years back in February, but it only managed to limp to #38 on the US charts – and an even worse #55 here in the UK. The failure lead to her having to cancel seven tour dates after tickets failed to shift, and she’s now rebranded it to a greatest hits tour in the hope of selling out the arenas she’s booked.

Jennifer and Ben, 51, finally married in July 2022, 19 years after they called off their original wedding in 2003. And an insider claims the couple are a match made in heaven more than in the romantic sense.

The source tells Closer, “As of mid-April, Jennifer is in full ‘reset mode’ concerning her tour, her public image and her status as a blockbuster entertainer in multiple genres and media. She’s got egg on her face and nobody is more familiar with that feeling, and how to get out of that kind of hole, than Ben Affleck. She has no choice but to draw on his advice and expertise when it comes to recovering from a tailspin.”

But with Ben also putting his heart and soul into Artists Equity – the production company he founded with fellow actor Matt Damon in 2022 – he’s bound to be feeling the pressure.

“The timing couldn’t be worse now that Ben is running his own studio and juggling more responsibilities than ever,” the source explains. “It’s just a very desperate situation and Ben is being called in to quarterback Jennifer’s total reboot of her tour plans this year and of course, they still have to release her movie ‘Unstoppable,’ that Ben financed, toward the end of the year. Jennifer didn’t want to be in this situation but she has no other options and the stakes could not be higher.”

Jennifer has already starred in two movies this year, ‘This Is Me… Now’ – a musical based on her album of the same name – and The Greatest Love Story Never Told, a documentary taking fans behind the scenes of the making of the LP. While critics blasted both films, the source says there is nobody better to console Jennifer than her husband Ben.

“Ben really does empathize with J.Lo because he’s had so many highs and lows in his own career. When he lost his part in Batman he was crushed, it took a lot for him to keep moving forward, but he did. Truth is, he’s also had his share of box office bombs and there’s been more than a few times he’s had to reinvent himself, so he genuinely relates to what she’s going through. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy for him to fix things for her.”

And the insider worries it may be Jennifer’s ‘Jenny From the Block’ persona that makes the rebranding a difficult ask for Ben.

They said, “One reason he’s always been able to pick himself back up so quickly is that he’s got incredibly strong relationships. He’s a very savvy business person and for the most part he’s aligned himself with incredibly talented and hard working collaborators. Even with his career mishaps there’s no denying that he’s got a great track record when it comes to choosing projects and negotiating deals, and he’s got a reputation for being very easy to work with.

“Whereas J.Lo has typically gone it alone, she’s got a very strong vision and is a perfectionist who only works with a very small team and for the most part it’s the same few people again and again, with her always at the top. She’s known for doing things her way, so it’s going to be tough for Ben to come on and convince her to delegate more or to trust other people to run the show, even though she’s the one begging for his help.

“Right now, she’s saying she trusts him to take over but the problem is he’s got so much going on himself, he doesn’t have a lot of bandwidth to micromanage her career as well. Another issue that can’t be ignored is how much J.Lo lets her ego run the show.”

And the source continues how Ben has looked to another Hollywood power player when it comes to how he holds himself.

“Part of Ben’s recipe for success has been his willingness to stay more in the background, as opposed to blasting himself from the rooftops. He’s taken a page out of Brad Pitt’s playbook in that regard, and he’s become a bonafide Hollywood heavyweight as a producer and built serious connections. And it’s those connections that J.Lo wants to capitalize on.

“The problem is she’s not great at taking advice. A lot of people in the business believe that her best chance of success is to go back to what she does so well, which are these cheesy romcoms like The Wedding Planner, Maid In Manhattan, Marry Me and so on. Those are what her fan base gravitates towards and she has the ability to make $20 million or more per movie at the drop of a hat so it makes sense to go in that direction. But she’s not very receptive to that plan, mostly because she’s still desperate for an Oscar.

“She’s got this insatiable need to prove herself and that does get in her way. She’s also trying to compete with all these young kids by touring and making more artistic projects that don’t really resonate with her fans because she still wants to be number one. Ben’s telling her she needs to slow down and stop trying to wear all these hats at once and just learn to delegate better and to listen to the advice of experts. But the question is, will she actually follow his advice and let him help save her career? Only time will tell.”
