The celebrities who swear by open relationships
Sometimes the secret to a healthy relationship is opening up your bedroom

David and Sian have an open relationship
Relationships often conjure traditional views of commitment: a couple binding themselves in exclusivity, vowing to be faithful to that person alone, in sickness and in health, until death (or divorce) do they part. However, times are changing – and celebrities have been the first to open up about their new bedroom habits. In recent years, there’s been an influx of famous faces coming clean about their ‘open relationships’ – meaning their antics between the sheets aren’t entirely limited to their partner.
Whether they’re enjoying a ménage à trois or indulging in some solo dating, here are the celebs who have spoken candidly about their open relationships.

Three’s the charm for David Haye and Sian Osbourne
Former boxer David has hit headlines in recent years over his unconventional triangular set-up. The 43-year-old and his girlfriend Sian Osbourne, 32, have been in a loving relationship since 2020 – but they’ve already welcomed several women to join them in their ever-evolving throuple. The pair allegedly indicted Saturdays singer Una Healy, 34, before welcoming actress Helen Flanagan, 34, into the fold. The pair don’t seem to be closing it down anytime soon, either, having since advertised on celebrity dating app Raya for a third party to join them.

Sharing’s caring for Michelle Visage and her husband
Michelle, 56, has enjoyed a 28-year marriage to her husband, David Case, with whom she shares two daughters. However, it was only recently that the RuPaul’s Drag Race judge shared the secret to their happiness. ‘We live openly,’ she said on the Origins With Cush Jumbo podcast, ‘so he would get off knowing that I was so happy and no matter what it is that I do, and I’m not just talking sexually…I don’t know if I have compersion [the opposite of jealousy] in me to be really excited if he’s doing something with another woman, but I know that it exists.’ According to Michelle, opening their marriage ‘makes us stronger.’

RuPaul doesn’t believe in monogamy
Michelle isn’t the only Drag Race star dabbling in multiples – with RuPaul, 64, also a fan. The legendary drag queen married long-term partner Georges Lebar, 51, in 2017, later saying, ‘The hoax is that monogamy is something that can actually happen…I mean, I’m as poly as they come.’ He added that his commitment to Georges fuels his commitment to being open, revealing, ‘I wouldn’t want to put restraints on the person I love the most on this planet. Listen, if you get something that you cannot resist and that is going to make you happy, go for it. Because the truth is, I know in my heart of hearts…that man loves me more than anything else in this world.’

Lizzo doesn’t like rules
Singer Lizzo, 36 – who’s been in a relationship with TV host Myke Wright, 37, for three years – has been candid about the fact that she doesn’t believe in monogamy. Speaking on The Breakfast Club radio show in 2022, the singer said she found the premise ‘a little claustrophobic’ – arguing, ‘I think a love relationship that’s not monogamous has no rules…I don’t want any rules. That doesn’t mean I’m out here f*cking and s*cking and ducking. It doesn’t mean he is either. It just means that there are no expectations, and that way, the love gets to just be the main event.’

Will and Jada have a ‘grown’ marriage
With entanglements and cringeworthy interviews, Will and Jada’s relationship is far from traditional. The couple, who got wed in 1997 and are still legally married, revealed last year that they’d separated in 2016. However, in the intervening years, the pair hinted to periods of openness – with Jada, 53, sharing during a 2013 interview, ‘I’ve always told Will, “You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay.”’ Will, 56, also revealed in 2021 that Jada had ‘never believed in a conventional marriage’. Actress Jada later said they didn’t have an open relationship, but ‘a grown one’ – with the definition of that very much up for debate.

Dolly knows the secret to a successful marriage
Dolly’s 58-year marriage to husband Carl Dean, 82, has outlasted almost every other Hollywood union, yet it might surprise some to know that the trick isn’t only having eyes for each other. According to the superstar, 78, their relationship is open – but with limits. The ‘Jolene’ singer revealed, ‘Yes, it’s an open relationship, but not sexually, and I would kill him if I thought he was doing that. He would shoot me too. At the end of the day, we love each other madly.’ While they’re at liberty to flirt away with others, adopting a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell policy’ is their code of conduct – provided harmless glances is where it ends.

Margaret is polyamorous
Margaret – who identifies as queer – was in an open marriage for 11 years with her artist husband, Al Ridenour, before their divorce in 2014. The comedian, 56, joked at the time, ‘I’m technically not able to stay with one person sexually because I’m bisexual.’ However, she later got more earnest, revealing that emotional loyalty was key. ‘I think when you have an open relationship you have to have boundaries, but ultimately, you want emotional monogamy with somebody no matter what,’ she shared. Margaret has since said she believes in polyamory – but she’s ‘too, too, too busy’ to romance as many people as she’d like.

Shailene’s all about modern relationships
Big Little Lies actress Shailene, 33, has been open about her surprising approach to monogamy. ‘Listen, I’m someone who has experienced both an open relationship and a deeply monogamous relationship in my life,’ she told The New York Times in 2020. ‘I think we’re in a day and age where there should be no rules except for the ones designed by two people in a partnership—or three people, whatever floats your boat!’

Brad and Angelina didn’t restrict each other
The bitterness surrounding their lengthy split is well storied – but less known are the specific terms surrounding Angelina, 49, and Brad’s, 60, ten-year relationship. The pair, who share six children, never stated they were non-monogamous, but Ange certainly alluded at her cynicism towards exclusivity. In 2009, she said, ‘I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship. It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.’

Being exclusive wasn’t on Megan and Brian’s agenda
She’s expecting her first child with ex-fiancé Machine Gun Kelly – but according to sources on the Hollywood grapevine, actress Megan, 38, had a very different kind of marriage to former husband, 51-year-old Brian Austin Green. Though neither has said their relationship was officially open, Megan got candid on a recent episode of Call Her Daddy. After calling their relationship ‘unfulfilling,’ Megan explained that she’d been too young at 18 to get into something exclusive. ‘I did a lot of falling in love with other people all the time,’ she confessed. ‘I would go to work and fall in love because I was a kid, and I never had the full freedom to be single.’

Dad’s the word for Nick
There’s unconventional, and then there’s Nick’s carousel of loving girlfriends. The comedian, 44 – who, among his 12 children, shares twins Moroccan and Monroe, 13, with ex-wife Mariah Carey, 55 – has never defined the relationship status with his other five baby mamas. However, Selling Sunset star Bre Tiesi, 33 – who shares son Legendary, two, with Nick – has called their non-monogamous relationship ‘naturally effortless’, arguing that she has no problem with Nick fathering children with multiple women. ‘Everything is respectful, everything is honest,’ she revealed, adding, ‘‘We don’t really define it.’
