A dating trend that involves throwing on an old top, some pants and espadrilles? Count us in! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s time to dust off your black suit and prepare to pay your respects to a dear departed old friend.
 
That\u2019s right folks, the dating app is apparently dead. RIP swipe right; fly high swipe left and rest easy swipe up. It was nice knowing you. (Well, apart from the bit where you didn\u2019t introduce us to one single, fully-functioning, normal member of society – instead just giving us a constant flow of misfits and catfish).
 
A recent poll conducted in the USA found that two-thirds of singles are no longer using apps, and a full 80% of people polled said they find the idea of meeting a partner IRL is \u2018cute and cool\u2019. Sounds like good news for the owners of bars and coffee shops then!
 
But wait a minute! Is there still some hope for the determined daters who are still using the apps in the belief that Mr or Ms Right is out there somewhere, lurking in cyberspace and just waiting to be whisked off their feet via a complex algorithm?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to the wonderful world of Goblintimacy (Yeh, we know that sounds kinda filthy, but we\u2019re talking goblin and not gobblin\u2019, and they are very different, so stop being so juvenile about this!)
 
It\u2019s a play on the slang term \u2018goblin mode\u2019 which has been around for years and refers to a kind of slacker existence of living in pyjamas, snacking from the fridge and basically rejecting any social pressure. This really hit a peak post-Covid, when goblin mode was adopted as a rejection of returning to the demands of day-to-day living, instead opting to remain on the sofa with a laptop, a phone and a family-sized bag of Doritos. Bliss!
 
Anyway, Goblintimacy follows the same vibe, albeit with some slightly more sophisticated attitudes to give it a bit of appeal on the dating circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how does it work? Firstly, Goblintimacy is a strictly no BS zone. So forget trying to portray your best side. This is the literal opposite of catfishing, so don\u2019t bother with all that fancy photoshop, or even stealing a picture of a supermodel to use as your profile.
 
This trend involves presenting the rawest version of yourself. And we\u2019re not just limiting that to your photos.
 
If you really want to give this trend a go, it involves paring down your profile to the facts. Just the facts! And if you get a date, then you really do have to turn up as your true self. No airs and graces!
 
Dating coach Amy Chan, author of \u2018Unsingle: How to Date Smarter and Create Love that Lasts\u2019<\/em>, says, “Goblintimacy is the dating cousin of ‘goblin mode\u2019. It’s a rebellion against showing up on dates performing a curated version of who you think someone wants and, instead, showing up as your real, authentic, actual self \u2212 quirks, flaws and imperfections included.”  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being ‘real’ on a first date has to be done appropriately, otherwise it ends up being a bit meh…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Of course, being your true self right from the get go is risky. But dating experts report that is exactly the point. No more spending weeks\/months trying to work each other out. You go straight in as your actual self and there\u2019ll be no sense of wondering if this is going to work. If it gets to a second date, you already know there must be something real here, because you\u2019re being REAL!
 
This also means appearances. Now don\u2019t be showing up having not showered for three days as that\u2019s just NASTY! But don\u2019t be obsessing in front of the mirror for hours. A quick wash and you\u2019re ready to go. Same with the wardrobe \u2013 throw on a favourite outfit that you\u2019d usually wear to catch up with a good friend. This isn\u2019t a catwalk \u2013 you\u2019re just fine as you are!
 
But as with everything in the dating world, there are limits. Oversharing too early could be unwise. Remember, this is a potential partner, not a therapist. Bringing ALL of your past traumas to the table on that first date isn\u2019t going to serve anyone well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also important to state here that we\u2019re saying \u2018be real\u2019 but we\u2019re not saying \u2018be blunt\u2019 \u2013 this requires some tactful behaviour. If you\u2019re naturally on the shy or reserved side you are still going to have to come out of your shell a bit and be prepared to make convo, you can\u2019t just sit there with arms folded, saying \u2018this is the real me!\u2019
 
 But this is your chance to be bold about your non-negotiables in a gentle way. And when we say gentle, we basically mean appropriate. See where the conversation naturally goes but just keep in mind to be natural and honest about your responses.
 
So for example, the conversation turns to your date talking about how they spent the previous evening on the dancefloor of a nightclub \u2018til 3am. Your idea of hell? Then you could be honest and say that it\u2019s not for you. Doesn\u2019t mean there can\u2019t be a romance between you.  Or your date talks about their family in loving terms, saying they see each other all the time. You haven\u2019t seen your family for two years because they\u2019re dysfunctional? Might be worth just saying that right now\u2026 what have you got to hide?
 
The thing about Goblintimacy is that you\u2019re not trying to be this perfect, Instagram-ready everyman or everywoman. You are just going to be YOU and if that\u2019s a gloriously messy, unprepared you then that\u2019s just fine.
 
Just promise us you won\u2019t actually turn up to the date in pyjamas!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
