Gaining notoriety for her role as Max Black in\u00a02 Broke Girls<\/em>, the star\u2019s career began long before then – even making a guest appearance in the iconic series\u00a0Sex and The City<\/em>\u00a0when she was just 13 years old.<\/p>\n But a career filled with as many illustrious ups as Kat\u2019s also comes with a torrent of downs. Now, she\u2019s spoken out about learning to brush off critiques at a young age \u2013 admitting that the Hollywood industry was \u2018cruel\u2019 to her in her teenage years.<\/p>\n Opening up to PEOPLE, Kat revealed, \u2018The time that I was auditioning and starting to act, it was a very different environment than it is now. There was not a lot of inclusivity at all. It was very harsh. I\u2019m like, how can anyone say that about a little kid? This is insane. For example, I was 12. I\u2019d go into an audition, and I\u2019d do it, and my manager would call me and I\u2019d be like, \u201cHow\u2019d it go?\u201d And they\u2019d be like, \u201cWell, they thought you weren\u2019t pretty enough and you\u2019re fat.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite being a teenager, Kat refused to let the comments break her spirit. Admitting she had a \u2018very strong\u2019 reaction to the unsolicited comments from adults around her, the star made it her goal to prove her critics wrong.<\/p>\n \u2018That was my attitude. For some reason, it didn\u2019t break my spirit. I was like, \u201cI\u2019ll show them.\u201d I guess props to my parents, because they were like, \u201cThey\u2019re idiots. Don\u2019t listen to them.\u201d And I was like, they\u2019re idiots, I\u2019m not,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n Hollywood has long had a problem with casual sexism. From \u2018too fat\u2019 to \u2018too old,\u2019 it appears women\u2019s talents often fall second place to their looks in the world of showbiz – and Kat is far from the first A-lister to open up about the more negative experiences that come from a career in the spotlight.<\/p>\n The 90s and noughties in Hollywood was a minefield, particularly for young women finding their feet. One of those who discovered herself facing the unwarranted opinions of others was Friends icon Jennifer Aniston, 55.<\/p>\n <\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=”custom-quote” _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”Libre Bodoni|||on|||||” header_2_text_align=”center” header_2_text_color=”#333333″ header_2_font_size=”40px” header_2_line_height=”1.2em” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″] Now a household name, it\u2019s hard to believe that there was ever a time when the star\u2019s talents were doubted. However, when she first started out on her acting career, Jennifer\u2019s agent suggested she lose weight to secure roles. And lose weight Jennifer did \u2013 30 pounds, to be exact.<\/p>\n At the height of Titanic\u2019s success, Kate Winslet, 49, was another star who found her body the focus of conversations. Recalling attending the 1998 Golden Globe awards with the Oscar-winning film, the Rose Dawson star recalled one interviewer saying she looked \u2018a little melted and poured\u2019 into the dress, adding she should have worn one \u2018two sizes larger.\u2019<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s absolutely appalling,\u2019 said Kate, rewatching the shocking footage years later. \u2018What kind of a person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who\u2019s just trying to figure it out?\u2019<\/p>\n At a 2017 event,\u00a0Hunger Games\u00a0star Jennifer Lawrence, 34, revealed her own \u2018degrading\u2019 and \u2018humiliating\u2019 experience with the film industry. \u2018When I was much younger and starting out, I was told by producers of a film to lose 15 pounds in two weeks. During this time, a female producer had me do a nude line-up with about five women who were much, much thinner than me.\u2019<\/p>\n \u2018We all stood side-by-side with only tape on covering our privates\u2026 The female producer told me I should use the naked photos of myself as inspiration for my diet.\u2019<\/p>\n And as Kat\u2019s comments show, even children aren\u2019t safe from Hollywood\u2019s humiliation. Carrie actor Chloe Grace Moretz, 27, is another young star who has spoken about being judged for her body – fat shamed when she was just 15 years old by a co-star. Chloe recalled, \u2018This guy that was my love interest was like, \u2018I\u2019d never date you in a real life,\u2019 and I was like, \u2018What?\u2019 And he was like, \u2018Yeah, you\u2019re too big for me\u2019 – as in my size. It was one of the only actors that ever made me cry on set.\u2019 Although Chloe opted not reveal the identity of the actor, she confirmed that he was \u201923, 24 or 25\u2019 at the time \u2013 while she was only 15.<\/p>\n But times are changing \u2013 and Kat says that the \u2018completely insane\u2019 industry has already made leaps and bounds when it comes to championing women.<\/p>\n Describing today\u2019s climate as \u2018much softer, kinder,\u2019 she adds, \u2018There\u2019s body positivity, there\u2019s inclusivity, there\u2019s representation, and there was none of that before.
