Can there be more than one woman at the helm of celebrity wellness? She started her wellness and lifestyle brand Goop as a newsletter in 2008 before expanding into e-commerce in 2011. What followed is a print magazine, a podcast, various pop-up shops, bi-annual \u2018wellness summits\u2019, a line of bondage harnesses, a viral candle called \u2018This Smells Like My Vagina\u2019 and a Netflix docuseries.<\/p>\n At least in the most capitalist sense of the word \u2018wellness\u2019, Paltrow reigns supreme. So how does she feel about other celebrity blogger turned lifestyle influencers foraying into the space? Especially when one such person is the Duchess of Sussex, who also happens to be one of her neighbours in Montecito, California.<\/p>\n It\u2019s no secret that Meghan Markle fancies herself as a lifestyle guru too. She started her own blog, The Tig, in 2014 where she discussed food, travel, fashion and beauty and offered her insights and observations on womanhood. It was rather astutely named after the actress\u2019s favourite wine, Tignanello (which you can buy yourself for a cool \u00a3140+). However, shortly after Markle started dating Prince Harry she was forced to retire from her post as a lifestyle blogger to become a working member of the royal family.<\/p>\n Sadly, we all know how that worked out, and in 2020 Harry and Markle stepped down as senior royals and moved to California where they now reside with their two young children. In their new roles as royal-celebrity-philanthropist-influencer hybrids, Markle has returned to her roots. In March, she launched her second venture with Netflix, With Love, Meghan<\/em>, where she explores \u2018the art of hosting\u2019, shares her favourite family recipes, makes her own jam, plucks herbs from her garden and tablescapes for her friends and family. Despite being met with a mixed response from fans and critics \u2013 unsurprisingly, given that Markle has been tabloid fodder for the best part of a decade \u2013\u00a0the series has been renewed for a second season.<\/p>\n With Love, Meghan<\/em> was launched in tandem with Markle\u2019s new Instagram page, where after a cursory glance she could easily be mistaken for a Trad wife. In her most recent post, Markle is facing away from the camera with her two children, wearing a wicker hat and carrying a wicker basket, as they forage around their manicured garden for fresh produce. The caption is, naturally, \u2018every day is a love story\u2019.<\/p>\n Paltrow\u2019s Instagram tells a similar story. Bordering her recent Vanity Fair<\/em> cover story are podcast clips where she shares her recipe for \u2018green goddess crunch salad\u2019, inspirational quotes about wellness and a reel where she prepares \u2018gluten free buttermilk biscuits\u2019 as part of her signature \u2018boyfriend breakfast\u2019 for her husband, Brad Falchuk.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=”custom-quote” _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”Libre Bodoni|||on|||||” header_2_text_align=”center” header_2_text_color=”#333333″ header_2_font_size=”40px” header_2_line_height=”1.2em” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″] In a world where it is not unusual for women to be pitted against each other for wearing the same colour to an event, the fact Paltrow and Markle have increasingly similar \u2018vibes\u2019 appears to be too much for some people to handle. There must be tension somewhere \u2013 especially if they both enjoy organic food, linen shirts and cooking in their Montecito mansions.<\/p>\n Paltrow\u2019s latest \u2018boyfriend breakfast\u2019 was even set to \u2018This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)\u2019 by Natalie Cole, which happens to be the theme song to Markle\u2019s new Netflix show. This gave way to an online debate about whether Paltrow was parodying Markle or \u2018throwing shade\u2019, with one article even claiming that Paltrow\u2019s biscuits \u2018sparked controversy\u2019. The Daily Mail<\/em> has even dubbed it a \u2018breakfast war\u2019.<\/p>\n During her recent cover interview with Vanity Fair<\/em>, Paltrow was asked her thoughts about Markle\u2019s \u2018Goop-adjacent\u2019 Netflix show and whether she feels the Duchess is stepping on her toes. Her response was incredibly refreshing \u2013 albeit disappointing for those feeding off the fake rivalry. She said whenever \u2018there\u2019s noise about certain women in the culture, I do have, always, a strong instinct to stand up for them\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018I was raised to see other women as friends, not foes,\u2019 the actress continued. \u2018I think there\u2019s always more than enough to go around. Everybody deserves an attempt at everything that they want to try.\u2019 Paltrow also admitted that, despite living down the road from one another, she doesn\u2019t \u2018know Meghan and Harry\u2019 well and hasn\u2019t spoken to them about the new show. \u2018I\u2019ve met Meghan, who seems really lovely,\u2019 she went on, \u2018but I don\u2019t know her at all. Maybe I\u2019ll try to get through their security detail and bring them a pie.\u2019<\/p>\n It was a perfect response to the easy, but ever so barbed suggestion that she might be \u2018threatened\u2019 by Markle\u2019s return to the world of health and wellness. Instead, Paltrow emphasised that she welcomes all women into the \u2018proverbial lifestyle space\u2019, crediting her mother Blythe Danner for teaching her that \u2018another woman is never your competition\u2019.<\/p>\n From Paltrow\u2019s signature whimsy, there\u2019s every possibility that she chose Markle\u2019s theme tune at random. It\u2019s unlikely she has even watched With Love, Meghan. Her making breakfast in her immaculate, expansive kitchen is hardly a break from norm anyway, let alone a \u2018parody\u2019. Most importantly, though, she has said in her own words that she has no issue with Markle\u2019s new career path, that she doesn\u2019t know her well but thinks she\u2019s \u2018lovely\u2019 and that she might even bring them a homemade pie.<\/p>\n Why, then, do we choose to relish in these fake feuds, particularly ones involving women? It only takes five minutes of browsing on social media to discover that there is no truth behind it. It is not a crime, or indeed the foundation of an interesting story, for two women to enjoy the same pastimes. Markle and Paltrow are both wealthy women who like growing their own cabbages and cooking in white trousers.
