Since the Duke of Sussex left behind his duties as a member of the Royal Family in 2020, Harry has appeared with his wife Meghan in a bombshell interview on Oprah, and with the help of ghostwriter, his memoir, Spare, became the fastest-selling non-fiction book of all time. It\u2019s fair to say Harry has been extremely public about the strained relationship with his family.\u00a0<\/p>\n But last week\u2019s court ruling \u2013 about the level of security Prince Harry, Meghan and their children receive while in the UK \u2013 gave us one of Harry\u2019s most illuminating interviews. Speaking to the BBC\u2019s Nada Tawfik in California, following the result, Harry said losing the case felt like an \u2018establishment stitch up\u2019. He also said there was \u2018no way back to UK with [his] family\u2019 and that he feels as if he cannot \u2018escape\u2019 being a royal.<\/p>\n \u2018I am who I am,\u2019 he said. \u2018I am part of what I’m part of, and I can never escape that. My circumstances will always be the same.\u2019<\/p>\n \u2018I’ve given 35 years of service to this country, two tours of Afghanistan,\u2019 Harry, who served in the Army from 2005-2015, added. \u2018I was born into these risks, they’ve only increased over time.\u2019<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-52114251.jpg” alt=”Prince Harry and William and King Charles” title_text=”Charles William Harry Balmoral” _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][\/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″] But it was perhaps what he said directly to his father, King Charles, which caused the most headlines \u2013 as during the interview, he pleaded for a reconciliation. \u2018I don’t know how much longer my father has,\u2019 Harry said, \u2018he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff but it would be nice to reconcile.\u2019 (Last year, the king was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer, something which he is still receiving treatment for.)<\/p>\n He also revealed that some his family won\u2019t \u2018forgive\u2019 him since his frank memoir was released \u2013 but he\u2019s keen to move on. In one of the most poignant quotes from the interview, Harry said there was \u2018no point in continuing to fight anymore, life is precious\u2019.<\/p>\n So, why has security, as Harry says, \u2018always been the sticking point\u2019? Well, when Harry and Meghan moved to the US, and stepped back as Duke and Duchess of Sussex five years ago, it meant they lost their automatic right to tax-funded police protection while in the UK. If Harry wants police protection when visiting, it isn\u2019t guaranteed, and he must give notice \u2013 which his legal team have argued could put his family in harm\u2019s way. With the latest legal case, Harry tried to argue that government committee Protection of Royalty and Public Figures hadn\u2019t taken into consideration the threats his family face when their protection was withdrawn in 2020. But his appeal was rejected, with one judge saying that though Harry made \u2018powerful and moving arguments\u2019, they couldn\u2019t be \u2018translated into a legal argument\u2019.<\/p>\n A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told the BBC: \u2018All of these issues have been examined repeatedly and meticulously by the courts, with the same conclusion reached on each occasion.\u2019<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=”custom-quote” _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”Libre Bodoni|||on|||||” header_2_text_align=”center” header_2_text_color=”#333333″ header_2_font_size=”40px” header_2_line_height=”1.2em” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″] It\u2019s clear Harry misses the UK, and he seems devastated that he can\u2019t show his children Archie, six, and Lilibet, three, where he grew up. \u2018I miss the UK, I miss parts of the UK, of course I do,\u2019 he revealed, \u2018and I think that it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.\u2019<\/p>\n Despite his latest legal challenge, it at least seems Harry and Meghan are happy in their relationship. During a podcast interview with Jamie Kern Lima last month, Meghan revealed that she\u2019s still very much in love. \u2018If you haven\u2019t noticed, my husband is very, very handsome,\u2019 she said, calling him a \u2018fox\u2019. \u2018But his heart is even more beautiful.\u2019 But, during the discussion, Meghan also made a not-so-subtle swipe at the Royal Family \u2013 saying that during the early days, she felt like they were landed into a war zone.<\/p>\n \u2018You have to imagine at the beginning, everyone has, like, butterflies,\u2019 she said. \u2018Then we immediately went into the trenches together. Yeah, right out of the gate, like six months into dating.\u2019 What Meghan was probably referring to was the vile abuse she received when it was discovered, early into their relationship, that the pair were dating; it was so bad the royals had to give an unprecedented statement against the \u2018wave of abuse and harassment\u2019.<\/p>\n But Meghan said she felt like the couple were going through \u2018more of a honeymoon period\u2019 now. \u2018So now, seven years later, when you have a little bit of breathing space, you can just enjoy each other in a new way,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n While Harry and Meghan continue to be honest about their complicated feelings towards the Royal family, it\u2019s guaranteed the pair will continue to ruffle feathers. There has been a lot of coverage against Harry\u2019s decision to speak out last week, and former Guardian royal columnist Stephen Bates summarised a lot of the nation\u2019s feelings with the headline: \u2018Memo to Harry: megaphone diplomacy isn\u2019t working.
