The US president caused a stir at the weekend when he suggested films made outside the US could be hit with 100% tariffs, to prevent Hollywood \u2018dying a very fast death\u2019. Not only was the UK film industry concerned, but news about the potential tariffs briefly hit share prices for US media companies such as Walt Disney Co. and Netflix on Monday.<\/p>\n Writing on his own social network, Truth Social, Trump said \u2018Hollywood, and many other areas within the USA are being devastated\u2019. He added: \u2018Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100 per tariff on any and all movies coming into our country that are produced in foreign lands.\u2019<\/p>\n Due to lower costs or tax incentives, it can be attractive for production companies to film outside the US \u2013 in locations such as Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand Canada and the UK. (For example, box office smash hits Barbie and Wicked Part One did most of their filming in the UK.) Trump later said other nations had been \u2018stealing the movie-making capability of the United States\u2019 and that if companies \u2018are not willing to make a movie inside the United States, we should have a tariff on movies that come in\u2019.<\/p>\n But there was a reason for Trump\u2019s outburst \u2013 as a day before his announcement, Trump had met Angelina Jolie\u2019s father, Jon Voight, at Mar-A-Lago.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-1183818078.jpg” alt=”Blake Lively and Taylor Swift” title_text=”TOPSHOT-US-politics-TRUMP-MEDAL” _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][\/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″] Voight\u2019s manager Stephen Paul said himself and Voight \u2013 who has been given the title of \u2018special ambassador\u2019 to Hollywood \u2013 had submitted a \u2018comprehensive plan\u2019 to Trump. It follows months of meetings Voight has held with people across the industry, to get ideas on how to lure big money film productions back to the US. In Voight\u2019s proposal, tariffs were mentioned, but only in \u2018in certain limited circumstances\u2019.<\/p>\n In a video posted to X earlier this week, Voight lamented the state of the film industry and welcomed the president\u2019s help. \u2018Our industry recently has suffered greatly over these past few years, and many Americans have lost jobs to productions that have gone overseas,\u2019 he said, speaking in front of a US flag. \u2018The president loves the entertainment business and this country, and he will help us make Hollywood great again.\u2019<\/p>\n Jon Voight, 86, won an Oscar in 1979 for his role as a Vietnam veteran in Coming Home. But, according to Voight, it was following his role as a former boxer in 1979\u2019s The Champ, that he says he met Trump at an Oscar\u2019s afterparty.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text module_class=”custom-quote” _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” header_2_font=”Libre Bodoni|||on|||||” header_2_text_align=”center” header_2_text_color=”#333333″ header_2_font_size=”40px” header_2_line_height=”1.2em” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″] Due to lack of detail, there\u2019s a lot of confusion about what Trump\u2019s proposed plans will mean, and whether tariffs would only affect films exported to the US, or American film companies producing films abroad. As the BBC remarked: \u2018There are more questions than answers at this stage.\u2019<\/p>\n In an interview with Variety published on Wednesday, Voight reportedly refused to \u2018talk about specifics or logistics\u2019 and, following negative press, said the media should be showing \u2018enthusiasm and gratitude\u2019. \u2018This shouldn\u2019t be political,\u2019 he also added. \u2018I don\u2019t know the political identities of the people we\u2019ve talked to. We\u2019ve talked to a lot of people here. I don\u2019t distinguish them on their party affiliation.\u2019 <\/p>\n However, these tariffs might not come to fruition, as Trump later told reporters at The White House on Monday that he didn\u2019t want to harm the moviemaking business. \u2018I\u2019m not looking to hurt the industry, I want to help the industry,\u2019 the US president told reporters. \u2018So we\u2019re going to meet with the industry. I want to make sure they\u2019re happy with it because we\u2019re all about jobs.\u2019 And earlier this week, White House spokesperson Kush Desai told various outlets \u2018no final decisions on foreign film tariffs have been made\u2019.<\/p>\n A few headlines about the Voight-Trump meeting have mentioned the fact Voight is Angelina Jolie\u2019s father. But Jolie and Voight have long had a complicated relationship. After Voight split from Angelina\u2019s mother Marcheline Bertrand, Jolie spent a lot of time growing up estranged from her father. \u2018When my father had an affair, it changed [my mom’s] life,\u2019 she later reflected in a 2020 New York Times article. \u2018It set her dream of family life ablaze.\u2019<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2308250.jpg” _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” alt=”Angelina Jolie” title_text=”Vanity Fair Oscar Party – Couples” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″] And in 2002, Jolie dropped Voight from her name, a month after her father said in an interview that she had \u2018serious mental problems\u2019. Later responding in a statement, she said: \u2018I don\u2019t want to make public the reasons for my bad relationship with my father.\u2019<\/p>\n But later, it seemed as if the pair reconciled thanks to Jolie\u2019s six kids \u2013 Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne \u2013 with Voight and the children meeting in 2010.<\/p>\n Voight has also publicly spoken about his daughter. Last year, he commented on Jolie\u2019s divorce from Brad Pitt in an interview with Fox News. \u2018I wish that would be over [and that] they found a way to make peace,\u2019 he said. He then added that he was concerned about the kids, saying they needed \u2018some stability\u2019. \u2018I love the kids and I love my daughter, and I want Brad to step up, too, [and do] what he has to do [and] end this nonsense,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n And in another interview for Variety last summer, he called Jolie\u2019s views on the Israel-Gaza war \u2018ignorant\u2019. Jolie, who has spent over two decades working for the UN, called for a ceasefire in Gaza in October 2023, writing on Instagram: \u2018Humanity demands an immediate ceasefire.
