The White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner is notoriously the one night of the year which feels a little more lighthearted than the usual White House output, a night which even gives the President a rare chance to laugh at himself. That was perhaps needed more than ever amidst a tense few months for Trump thanks to his war in Iran which has become increasingly unpopular, with its ensuing rise in fuel prices and the cost of living. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But within minutes the black-tie gala at the Washington Hilton had already descended into a terrifying chaos. What many first thought was a dropped tray or noise from backstage, was quickly identified as shots fired outside the main ballroom as an armed suspect attempted to breach security, causing terrified journalists, politicians and guests to dive under tables while Secret Service agents moved in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Donald Trump, his wife Melania and Vice President JD Vance were swiftly rushed out of the room alongside other senior officials as agents acted fast (this, after all, had echoes of the previous shooting incident, when an attempted assassination was thwarted in Pennsylvania in 2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One agent was hit but protected by a bulletproof vest, and the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California, was quickly taken into custody. The event was ultimately scrapped and is now expected to be rescheduled. In the immediate aftermath, Trump struck his usual blend of defiance and opportunism in the face of such incidents. He told interviewers, \u2018I wasn’t worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world\u2019, yet also called it \u2018totally shocking\u2019 adding that Allen is a \u2018sick guy\u2019. Police said they believe Cole, who travelled across the United States by train to get to Washington that week, acted alone, but did not expand on who his intended target was or what his motive may have been. \u2018We believe the suspect was targeting administration officials,\u2019 acting attorney general Todd Blanche told NBC on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump praised security, whilst also arguing the venue itself \u2018was not a particularly secure building\u2019, causing some critics to question how an event attended by the president and the most powerful of Washington\u2019s political elite was not given the highest level of federal protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This apparent lapse in security is one of the reasons that conspiracy theories inevitably started to do the rounds, particularly after Trump used the incident to make two separate references to the need for the controversial renovated ballroom at the White House, on which work began last year and is thought to be costing $400 million. In a Truth Social post on Sunday morning, Trump argued the incident underscored a long-standing security concern. \u2018What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE,\u2019 he wrote. He went on to claim the chaos at the Hilton would have been avoided entirely if such a facility already existed. According to Trump, \u2018this would never have happened\u2019 had the proposed \u2018Militarily Top Secret Ballroom\u2019 been in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across social media, claims the shooting was \u2018staged\u2019 had begun circulating almost immediately. On X, a wave of posts suggested the shooting had been orchestrated to build momentum behind Trump\u2019s push for the ballroom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other social media users pushing the idea that the attack was staged seized on a viral Fox News clip featuring Aishah Hasnie reporting live from the Washington Hilton. In the footage, Hasnie described an interaction shortly before the shooting, saying she had been sitting next to press secretary Karoline Leavitt\u2019s husband, Nicholas Riccio, who leaned over and told her: \u2018You need to be very safe,\u2019 adding that he appeared \u2018very serious\u2019 and was looking around the room before the call abruptly dropped and the news anchors tried to move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
