Like many US presidents before him, Donald Trump is no stranger to an assassination attempt. In July 2024, while campaigning for a second term in the White House, a 20-year-old man named Thomas Crooks attempted to shoot him while he was speaking at an open-air rally in Pennsylvania. In September that same year, a man named Ryan Routh was spotted wielding a rifle in the bushes at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while Trump was playing on the course.
 
In May the following year, the president received a handwritten death threat from someone claiming to be a Mexican immigrant plotting to kill him at his next rally. Last August, he received another death threat from a woman from Indiana, who posted intent to \u2018sacrificially kill this POTUS by disembowelling him and cutting out his trachea\u2019 on Instagram. That same month, someone was found with a loaded Glock handgun at Trump National Golf Club while the president was there.
 
Two months ago in February, the US secret service shot and killed Austin Tucker Martin, a 21-year-old man who was reportedly carrying a shotgun and a gas canister onto the grounds of Mar-a-Lago, Trump\u2019s private Florida residence. However, the president was in Washington at the time. And on 25 April, gunshots were heard during the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner. Secret Service agents evacuated Trump and his wife Melania, Vice President JD Vance and several cabinet members. The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was found with a shotgun, a handgun and three knives, and has since been detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearing in court in a blue jumpsuit earlier this week, Allen was reportedly polite and cooperative while speaking to the judge. When asked how far he got in his education, Allen replied, \u2018A Master\u2019s degree.\u2019 He has been charged with attempting to assassinate Trump and two firearms offences. He did not enter a plea.
 
\u2018The atmosphere was charged in that nearly full courtroom,\u2019 BBC News correspondent Shaimaa Khalil later reported. \u2018There was an anxious hum as people waited for Cole Allen to make an appearance, his first appearance in front of a judge after the event on Saturday.\u2019
 
\u2018He appeared very calm and quiet,\u2019 she continued, \u2018and addressed the judge with \u201cYes, your honour\u201d and \u201cNo, your honour\u201d.\u2019
 
While the suspect\u2019s alleged motive for the attack remains inconclusive, he allegedly sent a full anti-Trump manifesto to his family members shortly before the gala took place. In the email, he allegedly stated that he planned to target Trump administration officials \u2018prioritised from highest rank to lowest\u2019. He allegedly added that law enforcement, hotel employees and guests were not his intended targets, but that he would attack them if need be to reach the administration, writing, \u2018I really hope it doesn\u2019t come to that.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At certain points in the alleged email the suspect appeared flippant, joking: \u2018I apologise to my parents for saying I had an interview without specifying it was for \u201cMost Wanted\u201d.\u2019 He also allegedly wrote that he hoped the secret service, capitol police and national guard police would be \u2018wearing body armour\u2019. (One secret service officer was shot was wearing a bulletproof vest and was released from hospital on Sunday). \u2018In order to minimise casualties, I will also be using buckshot rather than slugs (less penetration through walls),\u2019 the email said.

Apparently, Allen\u2019s brother was so alarmed by the email that he called the police in Connecticut to alert them. Authorities claim they have also found information at Allen\u2019s home in Torrance, California, and in his hotel room at the Washington Hilton Hotel where the dinner was being held, that relates to the attack.

Offering an insight into his possible motivation, Allen allegedly wrote: \u2018I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes [sic].\u2019 This is something Trump was asked about directly the following day during an interview with Norah O\u2019Donnell for 60 Minutes on Sunday. Trump replied by saying only \u2018horrible people\u2019 would ask him about that. \u2018Yeah, he did write that,\u2019 the president continued. \u2018I\u2019m not a rapist. I didn\u2019t rape anybody.\u2019 O\u2019Donnell then said, \u2018Oh you think \u2013 do you think he was referring to you?\u2019 to which Trump responded, \u2018I\u2019m not a pedophile. Excuse me. Excuse me. I\u2019m not a pedophile. You read that crap from some sick person? I got associated with all stuff that has nothing to do with me,\u2019 seemingly referring to the Epstein files. \u2018I was totally exonerated.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire incident has caused a media storm, but as Khalil pointed out in her post-courtroom report, \u2018at the heart of this is that security breach\u2019. How did Allen get as close to the president as he did with a shotgun, a handgun and three knives?
 
The Whtie House has responded by saying it will hold a meeting to review US President Donald Trump\u2019s security in the wake of Saturday\u2019s shooting incident. However, Trump has stood by the secret service, which has come under scrutiny after Allen broke into a ballroom containing more than 2,000 people including the president, his wife and the most senior officials in government.
 
In a statement to the BBC, a senior White House official said Trump \u2018personally thinks they [the secret service] did an excellent job\u2019 neutralising the suspect and escorting him to safety. Hours after the attack took place the president said he \u2018wasn\u2019t worried\u2019 during the shooting, but \u2018can\u2019t imagine that there\u2019s any profession that is more dangerous\u2019 than his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
