In fact, Google Trends data reveals a 266% surge in searches for ‘Ozempic and Vulva Health’ over the past week.

But what exactly is it, and should women be concerned? Here, dietitian Karine Patel at DietitianFit shares everything there is to know about the confusing new term.

What is ‘ozempic vulva’?

Although ‘Ozempic Vulva’ isn’t a medical term, it’s a phrase that women are now using to describe changes in their intimate health, like irritation, dryness, and discomfort after starting Ozempic. There are several indirect ways it can cause vulva and vaginal health effects, even though there is no clinical evidence: they are linked from reduced appetite, rapid weight loss, and digestive side effects.

How does it happen?

Ozempic works by reducing appetite and slowing digestion. This does help with weight loss, but it can also mean:

Lower nutrient intake – As your appetite drops, you usually will start to eat less food, which can lead to you losing out on vital minerals, vitamins, and healthy fats. Over time, this may take a toll on your hormone production, the integrity of mucous membranes, and tissue repair, including those located in the vagina and vulva.

Dehydration – Ozempic can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and nausea, which all make dehydration more likely to happen. The vaginal and vulval tissues are extremely sensitive to the hydration status. Just as a lack of water makes the skin on your face or hands dry, it can also make the vaginal tissue drier, thinner, and trigger irritation.

Hormonal changes from weight loss – Fat cells are known for storing and releasing oestrogen. As weight is rapidly dropping, so are the oestrogen levels, causing mood swings, irregular cycles, and mainly vaginal dryness. Low oestrogen levels also reduce the natural lubrication and elasticity in vulval tissues.

Gut and vaginal microbiome shifts – Your gut bacteria can be altered as Ozempic slows down digestion. Because the gut and vaginal microbiome are connected, this may indirectly interfere with the vaginal balance of yeast and bacteria. Infections may occur, such as bacterial vaginosis or thrush.

Which nutrients matter most for vulva and vaginal health?

Healthy fats (omega-3s, olive oil, nuts, seeds, oily fish, avocado)

These fats are building the foundations for sex hormones like oestrogen and testosterone, they also aid the cell membrane to be flexible, which support lubrication and tissue resilience.

Vitamin E (found in almonds, spinach, avocado, sunflower seeds)

Antioxidants that maintain healthy skin and mucous membranes. Enough vitamin E can lower dryness and support tissue elasticity in the vulval area.

B Vitamins (B6, B12, folate, found in eggs, wholegrains, leafy greens, and fish)

Crucial for energy production, hormone regulation, and nerve health. A deficiency in these vitamins can lead to low mood, fatigue, and reduced sexual desire.

Zinc (found in chickpeas, meat, seafood, and pumpkin seeds)

Vital for immune function, collagen formation, and tissue repair. If the body lacks zinc, it may cause the vulva skin to be more prone to infections or irritation.

Iron (from red meat, beans, fortified cereal, spinach)

Low iron can cause fatigue and affect hormone balance. For menstruating women, this is especially important as both iron deficiency and hormone fluctuations can cause vaginal dryness.

Probiotics & fibre (from kefir, kimchi, yoghurt, wholegrains, vegetables)

A healthy gut microbiome assists in regulating the vaginal microbiome too. Probiotics help the growth of beneficial lactobacilli in the vagina, which help stop yeast infections and overgrowth.

How can you combat ‘ozempic vulva’?

Stay hydrated – Try and have at least 1.5-2 litres of water daily, if you are experiencing vomiting or diarrhoea, this is super important to do so. Water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumbers, and herbal teas, can also help.

Prioritise nutrient-dense foods – As your appetite will be low, every bite matters more. Make food choices that deliver maximum nutrients in small portions, such as eggs, salmon, leafy greens, nuts, and legumes. These all provide protein, iron, omega-3s, and vitamins that support vaginal health and hormones.

Don’t skip protein – Aim to eat lean protein like fish, chicken, tofu, or beans in every meal as this will support healthy hormones and help repair tissue, even when portion sizes are small.

Support gut health – A strong gut microbiome helps keep a balanced vaginal environment, stick to probiotic-rich foods such as sauerkraut, yoghurt, or kefir. This will reduce the risk of irritation or thrush.

Top up with supplements if needed – If you can’t meet the nutrient needs with foods, a good multivitamin can help. Vitamin E and omega-3 supplements are great; however, is best to check with a GP or a dietitian first.

Consider topical support – There are many lubricants, vaginal moisturisers, or probiotic suppositories that can be given over the counter. If dryness persists, a GP may prescribe a small dose of topical oestrogen.

Should women be worried?

No, women should not be worried as not everyone on Ozempic will experience vulval changes; however, if you do notice a difference or discomfort, it’s worth addressing early through diet, hydration, and small lifestyle changes. If symptoms carry on, always check in with your GP.

Photo: GETTY

[6

post-1220","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-feature
["GET
