George and Amal Clooney remain one of Hollywood\u2019s most elusive couples \u2013 and not just because they insist that they never argue, despite being married for more than 12 years.
 
Until George met Amal, he was pigeonholed as one of the entertainment industry\u2019s perpetual bachelors. He was first married in 1989 to Talia Balsam and then dated several fellow celebrities including Celine Balatran, Lisa Snowdon, Krista Allen, Sarah Larson, Elisabetta Canalis and Stacy Keibler over the years. However, none of these relationships seemed to stick.
 
\u2018I was like, \u201cI\u2019m never getting married. I\u2019m not gonna have kids\u201d,\u2019 he told GQ in November 2020. \u2018\u201cI\u2019m gonna work, I\u2019ve got great friends, my life is full.\u201d And I didn\u2019t know how un-full it was until I met Amal.\u2019 The couple met through a mutual friend in 2013 and got engaged less than a year later, tying the knot in Italy in September 2014. In June 2017, they welcomed twins Alexander and Ella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, what made Amal stand out from other A-list partners is her impressive career as a leading international human rights barrister, law professor and philanthropist \u2013 one who also happens to be gorgeous, glamourous and immaculately dressed. In other words, it was clear that George had met his match and they immediately became one of pop culture\u2019s most intriguing power couples.

In spite of their combined star power, George and Amal have done well to maintain their privacy and rarely offer up details about their family life. However, while speaking at a Cartier Dialogues event in Bangkok on 9 June, Amal admitted that marrying George changed her life beyond measure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I used to have my work life and my personal life, and they could look quite different, and I was able to not have them mix and then I got married and that changed quite a lot,\u2019 she explained. \u2018And at first I was kind of conscious of that one-dimensional view where I felt like, well, I can\u2019t be seen wearing this dress or doing this because I\u2019m in front of a judge on Monday.\u2019

\u2018But you know it just doesn\u2019t matter as much as living your life, and ultimately if you\u2019re good at what you do, that is going to shine through or not,\u2019 she continued. \u2018I wouldn\u2019t allow that factor to stop me from doing things that were important for my family or for my relationship. It was easier when I could decide what kind of exposure I got. It was something new to navigate.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George and Amal have managed to harness their combined influence in a positive way too, most notably through the Clooney Foundation, which provides free legal aid to young women and girls in underprivileged countries. Travelling all over the world for work was part and parcel of Amal\u2019s life before she met George and had children, but things have since changed.
 
\u2018You can\u2019t just go swinging as you used to,\u2019 George told People last October. \u2018Amal and I both had to change our goals on where we would go. I used to enjoy going to places that were dangerous. I liked going into the Nuba Mountains and Darfur and Abyei, and there [were] war zones. I found it exhilarating.\u2019
 
\u2018And Amal was in a bunker in Beirut for two years doing the court cases. And we had to make decisions not to do that once we had kids,\u2019 he continued. \u2018You had to change sort of what the rules were.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family now lives primarily on a farm in France \u2013 a 425-acre estate in Brignoles, which they bought for $8.3 million. It includes a 25-acre vineyard, an olive grove, a tennis court and a lake. The estate is part of an impressive property portfolio worth an estimated $100 million that also includes an 18th century, 25-room estate in Laglio, Lake Como in Italy called Villa Oleandra, fit with tennis courts, a pool and a cinema. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The property played host to several scenes in the second Devil Wears Prada movie and is where Emily Blunt and John Krasinski got married in 2010. Amal and George also own a 17th century Georgian manor on a private island on the River Thames, which they bought in 2014 for $13 million shortly after their wedding, and a full-floor apartment in midtown Manhattan, costing $14.7 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last December, the couple and their two children were awarded French citizenship, indicating that they have no plans to return to the US any time soon. Didier Bremond, Brignoles\u2019 mayor, told local media that their decision to become French citizens was a testament to \u2018his love for our country\u2019. He said that the Clooneys are \u2018a very simple and very accessible family\u2019, adding that \u2018here, he wants to live normally, and that\u2019s what he is trying to do\u2019.
 
George echoed that sentiment in an interview with Esquire where he said he was \u2018worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood\u2019. \u2018I don\u2019t want them walking around worried about paparazzi. I don\u2019t want them being compared to somebody else\u2019s famous kids,\u2019 he said. \u2018We live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it\u2019s like \u2013 they\u2019re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
