Move over hot girl summer\u2026 It\u2019s time for a nun girl summer. In case you didn\u2019t know, being celibate \u2013 in this case, avoiding men \u2013 is this season\u2019s hottest trend, after clips from the Open Mic podcast hosted by the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist have quickly reached viral heights, as they\u2019ve promoted \u2018mindfulness over men\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s not just nuns who are leading the trend \u2013 as abstaining from men is\u00a0something which has been openly discussed by the likes of Love Island<\/em> icon Maura Higgins and reality royalty Khloe Kardashian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0As The Sun r<\/em>eports, Maura \u2013 since gaining a whole new fanbase in the US following her turn on The Traitors<\/em> \u2013 has proudly spoken about how she actively doesn’t want a man, and earlier this year, she revealed she hasn\u2019t had sex in a year and a half. \u2018I don\u2019t want to bring just anyone into my\u00a0energy. It wasn\u2019t even a plan to be celibate. I didn\u2019t put a timeline on it,\u2019 she said, adding she doesn\u2019t \u2018even think\u2019 of men anymore.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also told Entertainment Weekly<\/em> in April she\u2019d prefer to stay single \u2013 if only to keep her house tidy. \u2018I don\u2019t want a man. I don\u2019t want anyone in my space. I like to come home to my beautiful, clean house,\u2019 she joked. \u2018I don\u2019t have to pick up their shit.’ But she also, more seriously, added she doesn’t even have the time to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khloe too has been candid about how she\u2019s avoided dating since splitting from ex-partner Tristan Thompson in 2022. \u2018I\u2019m \u00admortified that it\u2019s even my truth. This December will be four years. I get a little embarrassed,\u2019 she told Elle<\/em> in December 2025. But, luckily, she says it\u2019s something she\u2019s since changed her mind about. \u2018I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is so pathetic\u201d, but once you get to a certain place, you think, \u201cNo, this is so special\u201d.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hope Flynn, a dating expert, has told Grazia <\/em>there\u2019s a variety of reason women \u2013 and not just celebs \u2013 are embracing a \u2018nun girl summer\u2019. \u2018Honestly I think a lot of women are just exhausted by modern dating culture. Between all the dating apps, mixed messages, ghosting and feeling like you’re constantly having to put yourself out there, it’s no surprise that some women are deciding to take a step back for a while,\u2019 she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also says those opting for the trend are under no obligation to stay celibate forever. \u2018What’s most interesting about the trend is that it isn’t really about swearing off men forever. It’s about putting yourself first and choosing you for a change,\u2019 she tells us. \u2018Women don’t want to spend their summer endlessly scrolling on apps, analysing and figuring out mixed messages on texts or even going on dates they\u2019re not excited about. Instead, they’re putting that energy into their friends, hobbies, travel, work and their own wellbeing.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who\u2019s used dating apps for an extended period of time can probably relate to feeling burnt out by dating \u2013 and Hope says those feeling fatigued should maybe embrace nun girl summer \u2013 even if you\u2019re panicked about taking time away from the apps. \u2018If dating is starting to feel like a chore rather than something exciting, that’s most definitely a sign that you need a break,\u2019 she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I think one of the biggest mistakes I see, is people trying to push through dating burnout because they’re worried they’ll miss out on meeting someone when in reality, if you’re exhausted and frustrated – you’re often not showing up as your best self anyway, so why invest that time, effort, outfit, make up and money?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Choosing to take a step back can help you reset, rebuild your confidence and help you get clear on exactly what it is you’re looking for,\u2019 she continues. \u2018It doesn’t have to mean becoming completely celibate or deleting every app forever. \u00a0But sometimes it’s simply about giving yourself permission to stop forcing it for a few weeks or couple of months.\u00a0I believe the most important thing is that the break feels empowering and not like you’re giving up on dating forever.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the A-list figures leading the charge, Hope says it\u2019s a good thing \u2013 but she says celebs like Maura and Khloe are merely reflections of how society is changing. \u2018For years, there has been this idea that everyone should be actively dating, coupled up or searching for ‘the one’\u2019 she adds. \u2018So I actually  think it\u2019s great when high-profile women like Khloe Kardashian and Maura Higgins openly talk about taking a break from sex or relationships because it challenges that narrative. Although I don’t think celebrities are creating the trend I think they are just a public reflection of what’s already happening.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the whole, she says women \u2018are becoming more intentional about dating and are less willing to \u201csettle\u201d for relationships that don’t add value to their lives\u2019. \u2018When celebrities talk openly about choosing celibacy, it again just reminds women that opting out of dating for a while isn’t something to be embarrassed about,\u2019 she says. \u2018It can actually be a really healthy choice.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nun girl summer or not, it\u2019s important to date \u2013 or avoid \u2013 in a way which feels right for you. \u2018Women are becoming much more comfortable doing what feels right for them rather than following traditional dating expectations,\u2019 Hope concludes. \u2018Women can decide whether they want to actively date, stay single or take a complete break – the focus is shifting towards choice and that’s the main positive thing.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
