Viagra is best known for treating erectile dysfunction, but new research suggests it could play a role in slowing the spread of cancer. A study published in the journal Cancer Research found that sildenafil, the drug’s active ingredient, may help prevent cancer cells from accessing the cholesterol they rely on to spread throughout the body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experiments involving both mouse and human cancer cells \u2013 including breast, lung, and colon cancers \u2013 showed that sildenafil reduced the ability of these cells to migrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, researchers also found men who took the drug before being diagnosed had better survival rates than those who hadn\u2019t taken the drug \u2013 with those who took Viagra and statins (medicines to lower cholesterol) having even higher survival rates (though as this part of the study was observational, it cannot prove Viagra caused the improved survival rates). And researchers also noted they don\u2019t know if Viagra could be more effective with certain types of cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, due to the nature of what Viagra is usually prescribed for, it\u2019s not known if the medication would slow the spread of cancer in women. \u2018Our retrospective analysis included mainly men because sildenafil is predominantly prescribed to men,\u2019 Samah Hayek, a senior epidemiologist at the Clalit Research Institute in Israel and a co-author of the study, told Healthline<\/em>. \u2018As a result, we cannot determine from our clinical data whether a similar association would be observed in women.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hayek adds while \u2018these findings are encouraging, they do not mean cancer patients should start taking Viagra\u2019. \u2018Our study did not examine whether giving Viagra to patients after they are diagnosed with cancer improves outcomes,\u2019 Hayek added. \u2018It looked only at medication use before diagnosis and its association with survival.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And other experts have said it shows \u2018promise\u2019, too. \u2018This is an interesting study, and it was well-designed,\u2019 S. Adam Ramin, MD, a urologist, urologic oncologist, and medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists in Los Angeles also told the outlet. \u2018It appears to have real applications in real-world situations, so it shows promise.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from its potential effects on cancer spread, Prostate Cancer UK has also highlighted emerging research suggesting Viagra could have other benefits for men living with prostate cancer. PDE5 inhibitors have also been investigated or used to treat certain cardiovascular conditions and urinary symptoms, with ongoing research into possible wider benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We know these drugs are used for erectile dysfunction (ED) but they were actually created to treat coronary artery disease,\u2019 Sophie Smith, a Senior Specialist Nurse, at the charity explains. \u2018The fact that they also benefit men with ED was only discovered by accident \u2013 and in the late 1990s, this led to Viagra (Sildenafil) being licenced to treat ED. Cialis (Tadalafil) was later licenced to treat an enlarged prostate and high blood pressure too. So it comes as no surprise that men taking these drugs for ED might experience other benefits as well.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viagra was accidentally discovered during heart drug research in the early 1990s, but it wasn\u2019t until 1998 it became the first widely approved treatment for erectile dysfunction. But it also has other uses. Under the brand name Revatio, sildenafil is licensed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs). According to the NHS, it relaxes blood vessels in the lungs, making it easier for the heart to pump blood, also improving exercise capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A couple of years ago, it was also found in research from the University of Oxford Viagra could potentially help prevent dementia, as it was improved blood vessel function in people with cerebral small vessel disease following a minor stroke, supporting further research into whether it might help prevent vascular dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Alastair Webb, associate professor at the Wolfson Centre for Prevention of Stroke and Dementia at Oxford, said: \u2018This is the first trial to show that sildenafil gets into the blood vessels in the brain in people with this condition, improving blood flow and how responsive these blood vessels are. These two key factors are associated with chronic damage to the small blood vessels in the brain, which is the commonest cause of vascular dementia. This demonstrates the potential of this well-tolerated, widely-available drug to prevent dementia, which needs testing in larger trials.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
