But her latest venture has landed the 29-year-old actor in particularly uncomfortable territory, with backlash growing from female athletes who are accusing her of making a mockery of women’s sport.

The Euphoria star is the face of a new advertising campaign for US sports prediction market Novig. In the advert, Sweeney appears in various states of undress while pretending to play ice hockey, American football, tennis and basketball.

The tagline reads: ‘Confirmed: Sydney Sweeney knows ball’.The concept, which launched last week was intended to be playful. She also posted examples of male athletes who have stripped off, including Myles Garrett, Rob Gronkowski, Karl-Anthony Towns and Jason Kelce.

This response angered people even more, many commenters pointed out that Sweeney’s decision to double down rather than apologise for any offense caused was ‘worse than the ad itself’. One commenter on X wrote of the Instagram stories: ‘she’s trying to justify what she’s done, it’s all about money.’

‘I was honestly surprised by the reaction…I’m against hate and divisiveness.’

Indeed while Sweeney is not solely responsible for the advert’s concept, she isn’t just a fleeting part of this company’s journey. Novig has, in fact, confirmed that she has joined the company as a ‘strategic partner and equity holder’, making her a business participant as well as the face of the campaign.

According to founder and CEO Jacob Fortinsky, stripping off was apparently Sweeney’s own idea. The campaign brings that idea to life with confidence, humour and a playful edge.’

Perhaps the campaign has rubbed people up the wrong way even more than it might have done because Sydney Sweeney is becoming known for her penchant for pushing the boundaries in the name of advertising. In 2025, her partnership with American Eagle for its ‘Sydney Sweeney has great jeans’ campaign sparked widespread criticism over its use of language that appeared to promote eugenics.

In a now-deleted video, Sweeney said: ‘Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality, and even eye colour. My jeans are blue.’ The play on ‘genes’ and ‘jeans’ was intended as a joke. Yet the combination of Sweeney’s blonde hair, blue eyes and the suggestion of inherited traits prompted accusations that the campaign was promoting an uncomfortable ideal of beauty.

Several months later, she acknowledged that her silence had only ‘widened the divide’. ‘I was honestly surprised by the reaction,’ she said. ‘I’m against hate and divisiveness.’ But Sweeney is taking the big bucks for campaigns which are intended to be ‘provocative’, and end up being deeply offensive.

There is also the issue of politics here – and her response to it has often been described as a ‘cop out’ by her critics. Sweeney has long faced scrutiny over her perceived association with MAGA, after her political views became a subject of online debate.

The actor was criticised in 2024 when she shared photos from her mother’s birthday celebrations, with some social media users interpreting the images as containing right-wing references.

Sweeney did not publicly endorse Donald Trump, but he defended her during the American Eagle backlash, writing on social media that she had ‘the HOTTEST ad out there’.
