He’s been incredibly candid in a new interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the start of this year, it would have been almost inconceivable that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex could have made such a big U-turn on their decision to quit both the royal family, and the UK. By September, the Sussexes, along with their two children Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, had made a shock return to England after six years away, setting up home in the Cotswolds and enrolling the children in a private school there. Weeks later, and the Duke of Sussex has very publicly announced that he longs to reconcile with his family, including King Charles and his brother Prince William.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearing on the GQ series One More Question with Zach Baron, Prince Harry spoke out about his complicated relationship with his family. \u2018Is that something that you grieve?\u2019 Baron asked, to which Harry replied, \u2018Yes, of course. I think from a family perspective, again: another massively relatable issue for so many people.\u2019 He added, \u2018There\u2019s sibling disagreements; there\u2019s broken relationships between kids and their parents, kids and one parent. That continues to come up with me the whole time by people that I speak to.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harry continued, \u2018And then people maybe look at us and go, \u201cHow are you going to work it out?\u201d And then, maybe, how I see you\u2019re going to work it out, maybe that will help me work my stuff out. And some people don\u2019t want it to work out. I want it to work out. With everything else that\u2019s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That\u2019s the key point.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harry\u2019s interview came just days after he and Meghan made their first public appearance as a couple to Nottingham, the city where they first appeared together publicly in 2017, shortly after announcing their engagement. Greeted by cheering crowds, flowers and excited well-wishers, the couple visited three charities supporting young people and tackling food poverty. Meghan also reunited with women from the Hubb Community Kitchen, whom she supported following the Grenfell Tower fire. It was another \u2018quasi-royal\u2019 engagement, which the couple are said to be planning more of in their attempt to find their places back in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A return to royal style engagements, and a public plea for reconciliation? It seems that Harry would like to get back to the life he always knew prior to leaving the UK. Damage has been done, though, as we all well know. Harry has been shockingly outspoken about his fractured relationship with the Royal Family since he and Meghan quit their official royal roles in 2020. In his bombshell 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, he described feeling \u2018trapped\u2019 within the institution and said his father and brother were, too, while claiming Meghan had not received the protection she needed, as well as revealing she had been subjected to racist remarks by a member of the family they didn\u2019t name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He later expanded on the family rift in his Netflix documentary and 2023 memoir, Spare, detailing tensions with Prince William and King Charles and alleging that negative stories about him and Meghan had been leaked to the press. Despite the fallout, Harry has since expressed a desire for reconciliation. \u2018I would like to get my father back, I would like to get my brother back,\u2019 he said in 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Does he really think everyone has collective amnesia after the last few years?’<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The timing was perceived as inappropriate too, given Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, had the business of a state banquet to attend the very night Harry\u2019s interview dropped. Catherine was splashed across the newspapers in her floor-length, pale yellow Elie Saab gown with cape detail, as she attended the Omani state banquet after a ceremonial welcome was exercised for the country\u2019s Sultan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catherine was one of eight working royals at the event; she and William joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester at the event in Windsor Castle. With such a high profile event in progress, the royals were perhaps understandably, according to the Mail, said to have met the news of Harry\u2019s GQ interview with a frustrated \u2018eyeroll\u2019. One source told the paper\u2019s royal editor, Rebecca English, \u2018Does he really think everyone has collective amnesia after the last few years?’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baby steps towards a reconciliation were taken in July when Harry and Meghan took their children to Highgrove for a reunion with King Charles and Camilla. At the time it was said that the family spent an \u2018emotional\u2019 hour together, and during the secret meeting Harry and Meghan expressed regret at how things had played out over the preceding six years. Harry and William have not, however, spoken at all in four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surely, making such public steps to discuss his family life is the last thing Harry should be doing if he wants to make things right with the – very private – royals? Indeed, his words to GQ about \u2018some people\u2019 not being open to reconciliation caused issues in the hours after the 42 minute interview was released, when they were interpreted as a \u2018swipe\u2019 to William. A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex told the Huffington Post that the comment \u2018was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family.\u2019 The rep added, \u2018The comment was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harry’s interview, which was recorded in late September but released on Tuesday, focused on grief, a subject on which he recently released an online MasterClass, for which some estimate he may have been paid up to $100,000 (\u00a375,000). During the chat Harry said it was \u2018nice to be back\u2019 in the UK, and admitted the move hadn\u2019t been mapped out long in advance, but offered the family an opportunity to spend \u2018the next few months\u2019 outside the US. He added that Archie and Lilibet, are settling into British life. Harry said the pair were \u2018loving\u2019 their new school, explaining that experiencing two different cultures was important. \u2018For kids at seven and five, to be able to have that comparison, and to have two completely different cultural experiences, is so important today,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This latest twist in the saga for the Sussexes and the Firm is one that feels it may have done more harm than good – despite what were seemingly good intentions by Prince Harry. Royal sources are suggesting that if he and Meghan really do want to make amends, the first step might just have to involve keeping schtum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
