He was never far from controversy from the very start of his career, though his latest chapter is serious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 51-year-old is currently on trial, accused of offences against six women in incidents alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2009, when his entertainment career was flourishing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charges include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. Brand has pleaded not guilty to all seven charges, maintaining that his sexual encounters have always been consensual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"617\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2300429651.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2300429651.jpg 617w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2300429651-181x300.jpg 181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trial began at Southwark Crown Court in London last week, and saw the prosecution label Brand a \u2018manipulative\u2019 sexual predator as they opened their case before the jury. Brand has been accompanied to court by his wife of nine years Laura, the sister of former sports presenter Kirsty Gallagher. Since May, the Brands have been recording their Sunday Service with the Brands podcast, which is also released in video form on Youtube. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since being back in the UK for the trial they have recorded in their Henley on Thames home, with chapter titles such as, &#8216;Laura opens up about the media storm&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brand relocated his family to Florida in 2024, the same year he was baptised in the River Thames by TV survivalist Bear Grylls. He has built a large following, with six million subscribers on YouTube alone, after turning on mainstream media. His shows are far from his former stand up, and he regularly discusses his new found religious devotion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How is Laura handling the pressure?!\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sAnh4tCfT_8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple have addressed Russell\u2019s trial on their podcast. \u2018We are of course in the middle of a very, very unusual time in our marriage and for legal reasons which you be aware of if you follow what I would call old media, traditional media, at some points I would call it corrupt media, hypocritical media, deceptive &#8211; empire media, that\u2019s the term,\u2019 Russell said in one episode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018If you follow empire media you will be aware that, of course, we as a family and me in particular are in a situation that requires the authenticity and authority of true justice and for that reason we will be extremely cautious in any way we refer to the trial so that truth and justice are served for everyone involved.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laura described walking into court as being in the \u2018eye of the storm\u2019 as the couple were greeted with a crowd of photographers and media who were \u2018absolutely silent\u2019. She also described how they were reading Psalms on the drive there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote fp-pullquote has-grazia-font-family\" style=\"font-size:44px;font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><blockquote><p>&#8216;he was scary, he was demanding.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the trial continues, shocking claims have emerged. One complainant told the court that Russell Brand became a \u2018monster\u2019 during an alleged rape in a Bournemouth hotel room in 1999, while the Labour Party conference was taking place. The woman became emotional while giving evidence, telling the court she had been unable to fight back during the alleged incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018He just changed suddenly from this\u2026 camp, friendly and effeminate to monster-like\u2019, she said. She went on to describe Brand as \u2018dark and arrogant and performing\u2019, adding: \u2018he was scary, he was demanding.\u2019 The woman claimed she had told Brand \u2018no\u2019 and struggled to breathe while he was on top of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brand\u2019s defence challenged her account, suggesting she had not given the full truth about their encounter. His barrister also questioned why she had not left the hotel room if she feared she was about to be raped. In response, the woman asked: \u2018Where am I supposed to go? Her recorded police interview, played to the jury on the second day of the trial, included her recollection of Brand saying \u2018it\u2019s normal\u2019 during the alleged attack. \u2018He was just saying \u201cwe\u2019re having fun, it\u2019s fine, it\u2019s all good\u201d,\u2019 she recalled. \u2018Don\u2019t worry about it, it\u2019s just fun, it\u2019s normal.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman said the alleged incident left her feeling \u2018dirty\u2019 and believing she was somehow to blame.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the third day of proceedings, a second woman alleged that Brand grabbed her arm and attempted to pull her into a men&#8217;s toilet. She told the court that he had said, \u2018come on, come in with me\u2019, as he tried to drag her inside. The woman described Brand as having \u2018a wild look in his eyes\u2019 during the alleged incident, which was said to have lasted around 20 seconds. Brand&#8217;s barrister, Ian Winter KC, suggested that the woman had only come forward after watching a 2023 documentary examining allegations of sexual misconduct against the comedian. \u2018I don\u2019t think it\u2019s quite as straightforward as that,\u2019 she responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2299798024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2299798024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2026\/10\/GettyImages-2299798024-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another complainant, who worked at Choice FM, alleged that Brand sexually assaulted her in front of a woman and three other men. She claimed he kissed her forcefully and pressed his body against hers, describing his movements as violent and relentless. \u2018Going down my neck, his hands are moving so much that the reason I used the word frenzied was because it was just violent,\u2019 she told the court. \u2018It was hard and he just wasn\u2019t stopping.\u2019 Winter asked why she had not reported the incident to her employer. She explained that she had not contacted police because she feared she would not be believed and could lose her job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final woman to give evidence told the court that she had previously had a threesome with Brand backstage at the Hammersmith Apollo, leaving her feeling \u2018awful\u2019 and \u2018disgusting\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said she later had sex with him again, but described the encounter as \u2018very awkward\u2019, explaining that she \u2018wanted it to be over.\u2019 The woman alleged that Brand removed a condom without warning before anally raping her. \u2018I don\u2019t know how long it took for me between it going on and me asking him to stop, I don\u2019t think it was very long,\u2019 she told the court.
