The Legacy of War Foundation has confirmed that Angelina Jolie is visiting Ukraine, specifically medical staff, families, and volunteers in Ukrainian cities Kherson and Mykolaiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actress was reportedly seen wearing a bulletproof vest with a patch of the Legacy of War Foundation \u2013 a British non-profit helping civilians during war \u2013 emblazoned on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t Jolie\u2019s first visit to the country \u2013 she also visited back in April 2022, just over a month after the Russian invasion, as a special envoy for the UN refugee agency. During that visit, she spoke with people who had been displaced by the fighting in Lviv, including children who were undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in a missile attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian locals and journalists have spoken out in praise of Jolie\u2019s visit. \u2018Thanks to the fact that a star of truly global stature \u2014 someone with influence and media recognition \u2014 has seen the city\u2019s realities firsthand, Kherson residents received a ray of hope: maybe Angelina Jolie can use her influence to help the city somehow,\u201d Kherson journalist Yevheniia Virlych has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Many people in Kherson feel that the authorities, society, and even Ukraine have forgotten them \u2013 that no one is paying attention to the city\u2019s suffering and the citizens\u2019 problems. These thoughts undermine people\u2019s strength and their hope for survival,\u2019 local historian Dementii Belii told the Kyiv Independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018That\u2019s why people here deeply respect the courage of Angelina Jolie, because she was not afraid to come under bombs and shelling to support the people of Kherson.\u2019 Jolie\u2019s trip was unannounced, and therefore there isn\u2019t loads of information about her intended schedule for her time in Ukraine. But Jolie has released a statement with the Legacy of War Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018The people of Mykolaiv and Kherson live with danger every day, but they refuse to give in,\u2019 she said. \u2018At a time when governments around the world are turning their backs on the protection of civilians, their strength, and their support for each other is humbling. After nearly (four) years of conflict, exhaustion is visible, yet so too is determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Families want safety, peace, and the chance to rebuild their lives. Diplomacy and the protection of civilians should not be allowed to fall away in a brutal contest of weapons and technology.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While there aren\u2019t any reports of Jolie being in any immediate danger, there have been reports that her driver and bodyguard Dmytro Pyshchikov was drafted by the Ukrainian army on 5 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a checkpoint stop in Pivdennoukrainsk, in the south of the country, guards reportedly found his documents showed that he had no grounds for deferment from military service. Ukraine is reportedly looking to crack down on citizens who try and evade the military call-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports say that even though he told officials he was escorting \u2018an important person\u2019 he was taken to the Territorial Recruitment Centre (TRC), which handles enlistment for fighters defending Ukraine from Russian aggression.
Per the Daily Mail, Pyshchikov\u2019s girlfriend Yulia Lotytska told local media: \u2018He called me [on November 5]. I texted him several times before that, he didn’t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Then I decided to call, his phone was turned off. And he called after a while, told me that he was in the Mykolaiv region, in Voznesensk, at the [TRC]. That he had been detained, he was moving with the motorcade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018He had all the documents and a volunteer certificate with him. He is suitable for service in the [TRC] and rear support units.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The citizen, as a driver, was part of the group that accompanied the foreign actress Angelina Jolie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘When all circumstances were clarified, the famous actress continued on her planned route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Neither she nor her representatives influenced the work of military personnel and civil servants of the TRC and the Recruitment Centre, as some posts on the Internet try to suggest.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainian army did confirm that Jolie\u2019s driver had been drafted, only to later delete their brief statement, refusing to confirm or deny any details of the incident.\u2018The information being spread in the media is distorted,\u2019 their statement reads, \u2018an investigation is currently underway and all the circumstances are being clarified.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes after Jolie made an impassioned speech at Spain\u2019s San Sebasti\u00e1n film festival in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I love my country, but I don\u2019t at this time recognize my country,\u2019 she said. \u2018I\u2019ve always lived internationally. My family is international, my friends, my life. My worldview is equal, united, international. Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think is very dangerous.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So I\u2019ll be careful in a press conference\u2026 But these are very, very heavy time.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we expect more high-profile international work from Jolie? Back in 2018, when asked if she would ever work in politics, she responded: ‘I don’t know if I’m fit for politics \u2026 but then I’ve also joked that I don’t know if I have a skeleton left in my closet.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘I’m also able to work with governments,’ Jolie added. ‘So I sit in a very interesting place of being able to get a lot done, without a title and without it being about myself or my policies.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n
