During a study abroad year in Italy, Knox and her then boyfriend Raffaelel Sollecito were arrested for the violent murder of Knox\u2019s housemate, 21-year-old British student Meredith Kercher. Knox spent eight years on trial and four years in an Italian prison before being released and cleared of the conviction in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, a new eight-part Disney+ drama will retell the ordeal, told from Knox\u2019s perspective. <em>Nine Perfect Strangers<\/em> star Grace Van Patten will play Knox, with Sharon Horgan starring as Edda Mellas, Knox&#8217;s mother. Margaret Qualley was previously attached to the project to play Knox but pulled out due to scheduling conflicts. She is, however, listed as an executive producer of the series, alongside Knox and Monica Lewinsky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knox and Lewinsky are good friends after meeting at a conference they were both speaking at \u2013 with Knox describing the activist as \u2018very much like a big sister to me\u2019, making her feel \u2018seen and understood\u2019. Lewinsky previously described the show as focused on \u2018another young woman who found her life decimated and ripped apart on the world stage, but she somehow managed to survive\u2019. This isn\u2019t Lewinsky\u2019s first foray into producing, having helmed the 2019 series <em>Impeachment<\/em>, about her involvement with Bill Clinton, with Beanie Feldstein portraying her younger self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Twisted Tale Of Amanda Knox | Official Trailer | Disney+ UK\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KJIEpZSmPoY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox<\/em> is glossy and stylised, with whimsical, reflective narrations from both Knox and prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, who is convinced of his quest for truth. Flashback scenes from Knox and Kercher\u2019s friendship are also peppered throughout, most playing out against the rolling hills surrounding Perugia. The police are positioned as prejudiced villains, bullying Knox into a false confession. The series also depicts the slut-shaming Knox experienced throughout her trial, her sexual history splashed across newspapers after she was falsely diagnosed with HIV while in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the show\u2019s creator KJ Steinberg, Knox and Lewinsky worked together to ensure that the series \u2018helped the audience get to know [Knox] outside of her false imprisonment, exploring who she is as a human being.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2156549559-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Amanda Knox\" class=\"wp-image-798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2156549559-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2156549559-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2156549559-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2156549559-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2156549559-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But many have asked, does this tragedy \u2013 and its many complexities and multiple victims \u2013 need a television dramatisation? After all, Knox has written two memoirs about her experience, also participating in several interviews and a Netflix documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kercher\u2019s family have not supported this latest \u2013 or any \u2013 retelling of her murder. When filming started last November, Kercher\u2019s sister Stephanie released a statement about the \u2018indescribable void\u2019 that her death has left. \u2018She will forever hold a lasting legacy in friendship and kindness that no media can change.\u2019 Stephanie has previously said that Meredith \u2018has been forgotten\u2019 in the midst of Knox\u2019s story. \u2018It is very difficult to keep her memory alive in all of this.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote fp-pullquote has-grazia-font-family\" style=\"font-size:44px;font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><blockquote><p>&#8216;It is very difficult to keep her memory alive in all of this.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kercher family\u2019s lawyer Francesco Maresca described the series as a \u2018demonstration of a lack of sensitivity\u2026 Knox\u2019s silence at the moment would have been the most appropriate thing.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The true crime \u2018entertainment\u2019 genre has soared in popularity over the past decade, particularly with female audiences. But any retelling of a violent, real-life crime raises ethical issues, especially when the story is dramatized, which allows for more bias and stylised \u2018tweaks\u2019 than a docuseries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knox previously told Grazia that while she empathises with the Kercher family, she\u2019s telling her story for valid reasons: to fight a media machine and pitchfork public culture that thrives on misogyny. \u2018I legitimately went through a nightmare and had to survive a nightmare that I did not choose, so I sympathise that they have a hard time with me talking about my story, because they associate it with Meredith\u2019s tragedy but it\u2019s also my tragedy and I matter, too,\u2019 Knox explained. \u2018I don\u2019t feel any confusion or guilt or regret for telling my story and trying to make the world a slightly better place in doing so.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, <em>The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox<\/em> is exactly what it says on the tin \u2013 Knox\u2019s story. The series is gripping and well-acted, and it brings the full weight of her traumatic story to our screens.
