For most people, deciding whether or not to have children (or more children) is one of the biggest decisions they will ever make. However, it\u2019s becoming increasingly apparent that the rich and famous do not see it that way. Is it because money is no object, childcare is guaranteed and surrogacy is an appealing alternative to labour for those who can afford it? Quite possibly\u2026
 
Those are factors that sprung to mind when Lauren Sanchez, 56, revealed that she would \u2018have a baby tomorrow\u2019 with her husband, the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who happens to be the third richest man in the world. When the New York Times journalist asked Sanchez if she and Bezos were planning to have a child together she simply repeated, \u2018I would have a baby tomorrow.\u2019
 
It\u2019s possible that this was the honeymoon stage talking, since Sanchez is not yet a year married to Bezos. The couple got married in Venice last June, much to the dismay of residents of the floating city, and 200 high-profile guests descended on Marco Polo airport in 100 private jets. It was an undeniably ostentatious affair that drew criticism from every corner of the world, but Bezos and Sanchez\u2019s love for one another could not be denied. \u2018I\u2019m happy that I\u2019m getting married and I get to spend my life with my best friend, someone who sees me, someone who adores me,\u2019 the broadcaster and businesswoman told Vogue in the run up to their nuptials. A source close to the couple added, \u2018They can\u2019t get enough of each other.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘I would have a baby tomorrow.’<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In love they may be, but considering the fact Bezos is 62, Sanchez is 56 and they already have a blended family of seven children, few anticipated that they might want to expand their empire in that way. Sanchez has three children herself \u2013 a son Nikko, 25, with her ex-partner and former NFL star Tony Gonzalez, and a son Evan, 19, and daughter Ella, 18, with her ex-husband Patrick Whitesell. While Bezos has three sons and a daughter with his ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, who he was married to between 1993 and 2009.
 
After a flurry of reports about her remarks, a spokesperson for Sanchez clarified that she is not having a baby. It\u2019s possible that her comment was simply an expression of her enthusiasm for Bezos; she clearly wanted it committed to print that she would happily populate the world with more baby Bezos\u2019 if she could. Just what we need!
 
However, even if her desires remain hypothetical for now, Sanchez probably has a very different approach to having a baby than ordinary people do. Given that her husband has an estimated net worth between $254 and $272.8 billion, and she has an estimated personal net worth of $30 million, it\u2019s hard to imagine they will be changing many nappies, doing the night feeds or worrying about nursery fees. An unfathomable fortune is also likely to alleviate the stress of having a toddler in your 60s, or a teenager in your 70s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, Sanchez joins a rank of mega-wealthy stars who speak about having children with an uncomfortable flippancy, as though they are acquiring another sports car. There is a concern, in many of these cases, that the parents are not really considering the life of the hypothetical child in question. A child that will need love, care and attention, as well as their bottomless bank account, to become a stable, well-rounded person. A child that might also require, or at least benefit from, parental support in adulthood, which Bezos and Sanchez might find difficult in their elderly years.
 
It\u2019s an attitude that jars slightly, especially in the context of the dystopian world we\u2019re living in. This, it seems, is the main takeaway from Sanchez\u2019s New York Times interview, which is suitably titled: \u2018Someone Has To Be Happy. Why Not Lauren Sanchez Bezos?\u2019 The standfirst even reads, \u2018As half of an unfathomably powerful couple, Mrs Sanchez Bezos seems to have influenced the uber-rich to stop apologising and start enjoying themselves.\u2019
 
Aside from toying with the idea of another baby, we learn from the interview that Bezos and Sanchez start each day by listing 10 things they\u2019re grateful for, with a rule that they aren\u2019t allowed to repeat whatever they listed the day before. \u2018I talk about everything with him. Everything!\u2019 she told the paper. \u2018Jeff is my best friend, and I don\u2019t say that lightly.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy Chozick, the journalist, later joked, \u2018Mrs Sanchez Bezos has shown that with the right attitude and mind-boggling wealth, anything is possible. Space travel. The Met Gala. Fertility after 50.\u2019
 
She\u2019s right. Sanchez\u2019s happiness, optimism and enthusiasm are all qualities to behold, but they are not in step with the cultural climate. With World War Three pending, a global recession around the corner and a climate catastrophe unfolding before our eyes, Sanchez\u2019s happiness is not as infectious as she\u2019d like it to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
