Mackenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos has made an astonishing $70million power move by continuing her path as one of the world\u2019s biggest philanthropists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been announced Scott, 56, has made a donation of $70million to Meals on Wheels America, a service dedicated to feeding seniors, the disabled and those who are homebound. There is currently a four-month long waiting list to obtain the service due to there being such an incredibly high demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scott\u2019s donation is the latest of her incredible mission to redistribute her huge wealth that so far has seen her give away $26billion. In 2025 alone, Mackenzie was named the most generous philanthropist of the year after giving away $7.2billion to various causes and it\u2019s estimated she\u2019s given away 46% of her total net worth since she divorced Bezos in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been claimed that in total, Bezos and his new wife Lauren Sanchez have given away around $4.7billion. In 202, Bezos made what was the largest individual philanthropic commitment to climate change by committing $10billion to the Bezos Earth Fund before 2030. It\u2019s been reported that so far, it\u2019s released around $2.3billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scott and Bezos were married in 1993 just months after they started dating – they remained married for 25 years before they divorced in 2019. They have four children – three sons and a daughter – together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They met working at the same financial firm before moving to Seattle to set up the company that became Amazon. Bezos first founded the company from the couple\u2019s garage in 1994. Speaking in an interview in 2013 when they were still married, Scott said of that time: \u2018I\u2019m not a businessperson, but to me what I am hearing when he tells that idea is the passion and the excitement. And to me, you know, watching your spouse, somebody that you love have an adventure, what is better than that and being part of that.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they split, it was reported that Scott received 25% of the couple\u2019s shares in Amazon which amounted to 12% of the company. The settlement was believed to be worth around $36 billion. In 2025 she sold almost half of her shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘I have no doubt that tremendous value comes when people act quickly on the impulse to give.’<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In February 2025 a study by the Centre For Effective Philanthropy said her approach had \u2018transformed\u2019 philanthropy. It said: \u2018It could take decades to truly understand the effects these gifts have had on nonprofits and the sector at large. However, after five years of giving, the reported effects of her gifts on recipient organizations \u2026 remain overwhelmingly positive.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement shared around the release of her most recent donation, the president and CEO of Meals on Wheels America Ellie Hollander said: \u2018We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary act of generosity and trust that will help us move closer to a world where every senior who needs Meals on Wheels gets it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018This investment will help accelerate our strategic plan and strengthen the capacity of local providers so more seniors can access the meals and social connection they need to live nourished, independent lives.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gift will help expand the network\u2019s capacity so more seniors can receive the meals, connection and care they need.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, the year her divorce from Bezos was announced, Scott made the Giving Pledge. The Giving Pledge is a list of billionaires who have promised to give away half of their fortunes. It was a campaign created by Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates in 2010 \u2018to unlock vast resources to address the world\u2019s most urgent issues\u2019. More than 250 billionaires have joined the promise from more than 30 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On joining the pledge, Scott wrote in a letter: \u2018I have no doubt that tremendous value comes when people act quickly on the impulse to give. No drive has more positive ripple effects than the desire to be of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scott reportedly has a \u2018no strings attached\u2019 approach to her charity donations, meaning she hands complete control over how it\u2019s spent to the association. She has claimed she never \u2018loved\u2019 the word philanthropy because it\u2019s associated with \u2018financially wealthy people who believed they knew best how to solve other people\u2019s problems.\u2019 She added: \u2018How much or how little money changes hands doesn\u2019t make it philanthropy. Intention and effort make it philanthropy.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
