Growing up in the spotlight isn’t an easy task. As well as the immediate trial of performing \u2013 be it singing to fans, acting onstage, or remembering lines in front of a camera \u2013 behind-the-scenes pressure from the media, managers and even fans themselves can prove all too much for child stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time and time again, children who embark on meteoric rises to fame and fortune experience equally meteoric plunges to shame and penury. While many regain their image, there are a few who retreat from stardom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From alcohol to drugs, wild parties and family dramas, read on for Hollywood’s most troubled child stars\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lindsay Lohan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lindsay Lohan’s journey to fame began when she was incredibly young. Aged just three, she was signed to the modelling agency Ford Models. In her early years she appeared in a few commercials and had a small role in a soap opera, but it wasn’t until 1998 that her big break came when, aged 12, she starred in The Parent Trap.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With red hair, freckles and plenty of charm, Lindsay’s stardom was assured, and she secured leading roles in several cult classics including Freaky Friday<\/em>, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen<\/em> and Mean Girls<\/em>, all before she was 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 2007, the cracks were beginning to show. Lindsay checked into a drug rehab programme in Los Angeles while continuing to work on I Know Who Killed Me<\/em>. In May 2007 she was arrested for drink driving after she lost control of her car, and was admitted to rehab and fitted with an alcohol monitoring bracelet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two weeks after her release, Lindsay was arrested again, charged with drink driving, cocaine possession and driving with a suspended license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next five years, the Sick Note<\/em> actress was in and out of rehab and court, and at various points ordered to do community service, stay at home, and even go to jail, although she was released hours after arriving due to overcrowding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across 2013 and 2014, once Lindsay’s felony probation had been lifted, she worked both on improving her public image and a return to acting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lindsay managed to get her life and public image back on track, which was also helped by a move to Dubai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I got there, and I felt a certain sense of calm. I think it’s because the paparazzi are illegal there. I really found that I had a private life, and I could just take time for myself,” she told Vogue<\/em><\/a> <\/em>in 2022.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lindsay now has a husband, Bader Shammas, whom she married in 2022. They share a child together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jenette McCurdy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jenette McCurdy was something of a poster child for Nickelodeon during her starring role in iCarly<\/em>. However, the smiling face seen plastered on lunchboxes and t-shirts was completely removed from reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jenette’s mother, Debra, was extremely controlling, to the extent where she would shower and shave her daughter and give her vaginal and breast exams, ostensibly to check for cancerous lumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From as early as 11, Debra encouraged Jenette to restrict calories in order to delay puberty and secure more roles. This developed into anorexia, and later bulimia and binging. Jenette also struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also used sex and alcohol as coping mechanisms, and continued to suffer emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her book, I’m Glad My Mom Died<\/em>, she also referenced ‘The Creator’, a person working on the show who was barred from set after accusations of emotional abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Tomorrow he might be screaming insults in my face that will hurt me just as much as the compliments raise me up,” she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After her mother died in 2013, Jenette began the work of healing herself, attending therapy and coming to terms with what had happened to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s no f***ing wonder people go off the deep end. It\u2019s no f***ing wonder people shave their head and get tattoos on their face or pee in buckets. It’s no wonder that people have mental health struggles and very public breakdowns,” she told The Washington Post<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m really grateful that I didn’t have that. My breakdown was private. I break down in silence, in the sad silence of my own doom.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the harrowing nature of her early life, Jenette has since flourished, directing several short films and writing a book of essays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

River Phoenix<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The tragic child star shot to fame in the 80s, his breakout role the 1986 film Stand by Me<\/em>. Two years later, aged just 18, he secured both Golden Globes and Academy Award nominations for Running on Empty. <\/em>He also starred in cult classics including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade<\/em> in 1989, and My Own Private Idaho<\/em> in 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1993, he was hotly in demand and slated to star in Interview with a Vampire<\/em>, but in October of that year he tragically lost his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 30 <\/sup>October 1993, River, his brother Leaf (now Joaquin), sister Rain, and girlfriend Samantha Mathis went to the Viper Room, an LA club co-owned at the time by Johnny Depp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samantha told The Guardian<\/em><\/a>: “I knew he was high that night, but the heroin that killed him didn\u2019t happen until he was in the Viper Room. I have my suspicions about what was going on, but I didn\u2019t see anything.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

River was pushed out of the club and lay on the street, having convulsions. Joaquin called the paramedics, but River could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the hospital from an overdose of cocaine and heroin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were mixed reports and speculation about the nature of River’s involvement with drugs, whether he had been addicted prior to his overdose or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same Guardian interview, Samantha said River was “sensitive and obsessive\u201d and someone who \u201cfelt things in his heart very deeply”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin Bieber<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2007, Justin Bieber was a child from Canada posting singing videos on YouTube when he was discovered by Scooter Braun. His mother was convinced to let her 12-year-old son fly out to America to meet singer-songwriter Usher, where he signed with the Raymond Braun Media Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a sequence of events that kickstarted his career and propelled him to global stardom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I went from a 13-year-old boy from a small town to being praised left and right by the world, with millions saying how much they loved me and how great I was. You hear these things enough as a young boy and you actually start believing it,” he wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were uncomfortable incidents when Justin was sexualised in spite of his age. A female radio host once asked him on air to give her the “sex talk”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I really, I feel uncomfortable right now,” he responded. “Why do you want to know the sex talk from a 15-year-old boy? That’s pretty weird.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was also groped onstage and exposed to inappropriate commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it comes as no surprise that Justin turned to drugs and acting out. In 2014, he was charged with offences including vandalism and driving under the influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Instagram, he admitted to using “pretty heavy drugs” and abusing the relationships he was in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I made every bad decision you could have thought of and went from one of the most loved and adored people in the world to the most ridiculed, judged and hated person in the world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a 2020 documentary, Justin revealed: “My security would come into my room at night to check my pulse. People don’t know how serious it got. It was legit crazy scary.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His experience scarred him so profoundly, he told Apple Music’s Beats he hoped musician Billie Eilish, whose star was in the ascendancy at the time, would avoid a similar fate: “I don’t want her to go through anything I went through. I don’t wish that upon anybody.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin has since credited his wife Hailey and his faith for helping him turn his life around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drew Barrymore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Actress and TV presenter Drew started out at just 11 months old, acting in a dog food commercial. It was her role at seven years old in Steven Spielberg’s E.T.<\/em> that pushed her into the acting stratosphere, but when she was nine, Drew’s mother took her to Studio 54 where she was first introduced to drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aged 12, Drew was addicted to drugs and alcohol, an addiction that led her to attempt suicide. Aged 14, she fled both her parents in an effort to turn her life around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My life was not normal. I was not a kid in school with normal circumstances. There was something very abnormal, and I needed some severe shift,” she told The Guardian<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, she struggled to find work. “To have such a big career at such a young age, then nothing for years \u2013 people going, you’re an unemployable disaster \u2013 that’s a tough trip to have by the time you\u2019re 14. To have access to so many things, then to nothing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drew worked in restaurants to make ends meet, then eventually made a return to acting. She stayed sober and has since started an eponymous talk show in the US, where she interviews celebrity guests. She has a husband and two daughters, Frankie and Olive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judy Garland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Born Frances Gumm, Judy was on stage by the time she was two, joining her sisters in a family act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 13, she was signed to the studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where bosses encouraged her to take ‘pep pills’ or amphetamines for energy and to lose weight, then sleeping pills at night to counteract the pills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She secured her breakthrough role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz<\/em> aged 16, but the role was used against her as Dorothy was supposed to be twelve. Judy existed on a strict diet of chicken soup, black coffee, 80 (appetite-suppressing) cigarettes per day and diet pills to control her weight. She was also physically molested on set, allegedly by studio executives and the actors playing munchkins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All this, along with a series of failed relationships, contributed to Judy’s struggles with mental ill health and addiction, including a public breakdown and suicide attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She died prematurely at 47 from an accidental overdose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demi Lovato<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Aged just six, Demi starred on Barney and Friends<\/em> and was signed to Disney four years later. At fifteen, she starred opposite boy band star Joe Jonas in Camp Rock<\/em> and became a household name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the smile and the singing was a much darker reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the glare of the spotlight, Demi suffered from bulimia and addiction to drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine, and I would bring it on airplanes. I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep, and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom, and I’d do it. That\u2019s how difficult it got and that was even with somebody [with me]. I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24\/7 and living with me [and] I was able to hide it from them as well,” she told Access Hollywood<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demi attended rehab but suffered a near-fatal overdose in July 2018. She suffered three strokes and a heart attack, and has blind spots in her vision as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Demi has continued to work hard on recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amanda Bynes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The face of Nickelodeon in the 90s, Amanda first shot to fame in the shows All That<\/em> and The Amanda Show<\/em>. Her trajectory continued into the early 00s as she took starring roles in cult chick-flicks She’s The Man, Hairspray<\/em>, What a Girl Wants<\/em> and Easy A<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2010, Amanda announced her retirement from acting via a tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While fans at the time were puzzled by the news, Amanda later told Paper<\/em>: “I started smoking marijuana when I was 16. Even though everyone thought I was the ‘good girl,’ I did smoke marijuana from that point on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Later it progressed to doing MDMA and ecstasy,” adding that she had also tried Adderall but not continued using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Easy A<\/em> came out, it upset Amanda. “I saw it and I was convinced that I should never be on camera again and I officially retired on Twitter, which was also stupid.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained how she “got really into [her] drug usage” and “was just stuck at home, getting high, watching TV and tweeting.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things escalated from there in 2013 following a series of ill-judged and bizarre tweets, arrests, DUI and several incidences of hit-and-run, and further drug abuse, including one incident where she reportedly threw a bong out of a 36th<\/sup> floor window in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same year, she was placed under conservatorship by a judge, who granted Amanda’s mother Lynn with a temporary conservatorship to protect the actress and her estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, Amanda’s conservatorship ended after nine years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edward Furlong<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A 13-year-old Edward had no acting credits to his name when he was cast in Terminator 2: Judgement Day<\/em>, a role which kickstarted what should have been a promising career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years later, aged 15, Edward entered into a controversial relationship with Jacqueline Domac, a woman 14 years his senior, who tutored him on the set of Terminator 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1998 he starred in American History X<\/em>, but things began to deteriorate from there. He split from Jacqueline in 1999 and she sued him for assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edward also struggled with addiction, and was hospitalised in 2001 at 23 years old after a suspected drug overdose. What followed were stints in rehab, relapses, and several arrests, including one incident where he tried to free live lobsters from a shop window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was never a normal teenager. I had a very un-normal life. I was almost destined for [drug addiction]. In a weird way, I never really felt like I fit in,” he told Dailymail.com<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So, when I was high, I had camaraderie with other people. Just drinking and partying. All of a sudden, I felt like I was with people and I fit in somehow. That’s how it started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But it’s a whole other thing when you get to the hard drugs. In my twenties, I was partying and wanting to go out every night, but I was so tired and I’d be drunk and want to do more cocaine so I could wake up and drink some more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But that all spirals into, now I’m whacked out of my head and want to go to bed, so now I need something to put me to sleep which would be Xanax or heroin.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He suffered with relationship troubles too, and had a restraining order taken out against him by a former partner, who alleged that he punched her in the face while on drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edward’s misery further spiralled when continued use of crystal meth rotted his teeth, but had them replaced with veneers in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained the decision to Dailymail.com<\/em>. “It sounds weird for me to be talking about teeth because I don’t live and breathe the way I look but every time I looked in the mirror, it just bummed me out as a reminder of what I had done for all those years.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s nice to get a second chance. It was a no-brainer, I’m super glad I did it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following an arrest in 2017, he checked into rehab for a year, and has been able to turn over a new, sober leaf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miley Cyrus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Propelled to stardom in Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana<\/em>, Miley’s gruelling work schedule as a 12-year-old often included waking at 5:30am, having interviews and shoots all day before flying back to set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained how the pressure got to her, telling Marie <\/em>Claire<\/a>: “I would have anxiety attacks. I’d get hot flashes, feel like I was about to pass out or throw up. It would happen a lot before shows, and I’d have to cancel. Then the anxiety started coming from anxiety.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miley also revealed to the magazine how the experience of playing two people messed with her psyche, saying: “From the time I was 11, it was, ‘You’re a pop star! That means you have to be blonde, and you have to have long hair, and you have to put on some glittery tight thing.’ Meanwhile, I’m this fragile little girl playing a 16-year-old in a wig and a ton of makeup. It was like Toddlers & Tiaras. I had f**king flippers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was told for so long what a girl is supposed to be from being on that show. I was made to look like someone that I wasn’t, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn’t on that show, it was like, ‘Who the f**k am I?'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The singer also explained how she wrestled with “guilt and shame” for causing controversies as a teenager, before realising that she was judged harshly by the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macaulay Culkin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Best known for his adorable portrayal of Kevin McAllister in iconic Christmas film Home Alone<\/em>, Macaulay’s life off-screen was anything but wholesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actor has accused his father of being physically and emotionally abusive from a young age: “He was a bad man. He was abusive, physically and mentally \u2013 I can show you all my scars if I wanted to,” he told Marc Maron on his podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Macaulay was 15, his parents separated, and he became the centre of a battle both for custody and control of his earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Basically, I had millions and millions of dollars in the bank, and my mother couldn\u2019t pay the rent because she was spending all of her money on lawyers,” he explained to New York magazine<\/em><\/a>. “We were about to get evicted from our apartment. The only way I could get access to that money was to take my father\u2019s name off it, but I didn\u2019t want to make it messy, so I figured I\u2019d take both their names off.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heartbreakingly, Macaulay’s father did not appear for the final day of the custody trial and has not spoken to the family since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the difficulties of his youth, Macauley has managed to move past the perils of young fame and have a family of his own, with fellow child star Brenda Song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If you know a little about me then you\u2019d know I\u2019ve had a complicated relationship with Father\u2019s Day in the past,” he captioned an Instagram post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But since becoming a papa myself I\u2019ve decided to reinvent the wheel. Other than getting an hour or two of extra sleep I try to make the day a celebration of my boys more than me. After all, they are the ones who made me a father (no offense to Brenda).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something of a poster child for the troubled star, Britney’s public journey from pop princess to a 14-year conservatorship had to be seen to be believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She joined Disney Channel’s The All New Mickey Mouse Club<\/em> at just 12 years old, alongside future stars Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time Britney was 15 she’d signed a record deal, but media intrusion and her sexualisation had already begun with adult journalists asking about her skimpy outfits and breasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1999, aged 16, she became a global phenomenon thanks to the single ‘…Baby One More Time’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Britney’s musical fame increased, pressure and speculation on her personal life and mental health increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She married her childhood friend Jason Alexander while drunk for 55 hours in Las Vegas aged 22. Her second marriage was to backup dancer Kevin Federline in 2004, and the couple had two sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her memoir, The Woman In Me<\/em>, she explained how the scrutiny made her post-natal depression worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I now know that I was displaying just about every symptom of perinatal depression: sadness, anxiety, fatigue. Once the babies were born, I added on my confusion and obsession about the babies’ safety, which was ratcheting up the more media attention was on us. Being a new mom is challenging enough without trying to do everything under a microscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“With Kevin away so much, no one was around to see me spiral \u2013 except every paparazzo in America.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, Britney shaved her head and attacked a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella. In the same year, a conservatorship was installed against her will, giving her father Jamie near-total control over her finances and career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If they’d let me live my life, I know I would\u2019ve followed my heart and come out of this the right way and worked it out. Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself,” she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she tried to rebel against the control exerted and refused to perform, she was checked into a rehab facility in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My father said that if I didn\u2019t go, then I\u2019d have to go to court, and I\u2019d be embarrassed. He said, \u2018We will make you look like a f***ing idiot, and trust me, you will not win. It\u2019s better me telling you to go versus a judge in court telling you.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt like it was a form of blackmail and I was being gaslit. I honestly felt they were trying to kill me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The #FreeBritney gained momentum in subsequent years, and Britney made a 23-minute speech protesting the conservatorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m not happy. I’m so angry it’s insane, and I’m depressed. I cry every day.” She said her father “loved the control he had over me”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement culminated in a landmark hearing in 2021 which terminated the conservatorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
