Millie Bobby Brown experienced an accent shift as a child star, splitting her time between the US and UK while filming Stranger Things<\/em>, while Austin Butler spent years immersed in his role as Elvis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fast and Furious <\/em>actress is South African and spent her teenage years on a small, rural farm. Charlize grew up speaking Afrikaans, which is derived from Dutch and was historically the joint official language of South Africa alongside English during the apartheid era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 When she moved to Los Angeles at 18, she was told she wouldn\u2019t get acting roles unless she shook off her accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Something happens to you when somebody says you’re not going to get a job until you lose the accent,” she explained on Conan O’Brien’s talk show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Back then I had about five bucks a day, and I couldn’t afford a dialect coach, so I would watch American television 24\/7. Dynasty<\/em>, Dallas<\/em>, The Love Boat<\/em>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of living in the US, Charlize now sounds convincingly American, even to trained ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ariana\u2019s voice and accent have evolved noticeably over the years. Fans recently commented on her vocal transitions during interviews for Wicked<\/em>, in which she plays the bubbly Glinda the Good Witch. Responding on TikTok, Ariana explained her changes were due to \u201chabit\u201d and \u201cvocal health\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She elaborated: “I intentionally change my vocal placement (high \/ low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing,” before insisting that it was something she’d always done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ariana raised the issue again during an appearance on the Shut Up Evan<\/em><\/a> <\/em>podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: “I did just spend a long time playing a character every single day and training my voice to do different things. The voice is in the body; it’s an instrument, and muscle memory is a real thing. That’s a normal thing for people who, it’s their job to transform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You see male actors\u2026Always after the fact that they’re like: ‘Oh, wow, how dedicated to his craft. What an amazing transformation! He’s a brilliant performer! And God forbid I sneeze like Glinda.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She defended her ever-changing voice: “I had a job to do. People change and habits happen. It’s a strange thing to be under such a microscope.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lindsay Lohan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lindsay has confused viewers over the years with her cross-country accent. While she first navigated the switch for her role as one British and one American twin in The Parent Trap<\/em>, in more recent years her accent seems to have picked up hints of Greek, British and general European tones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Our Little Secret<\/em> actress, who lives in Dubai, attributes her linguistic mix to her global lifestyle and language learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think when I\u2019m around certain dialects it changes each time,” she told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lindsay also attributed her accent to her language-learning prowess, telling The Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>:<\/em> “It’s a mixture of most of the languages I can understand or am trying to learn. I’ve been learning different languages since I was a child. I’m fluent in English and French can understand Russian and am learning Turkish, Italian and Arabic.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austin Butler made headlines for his commitment to acting when playing the titular role in Elvis<\/em>. The Golden Globe winner revealed he’d watched hours of footage of the late singer to try to replicate his iconic drawl, going so far as to stay in the voice when he wasn’t in character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having worked on the film for three years, the accent seemed to stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was a lot,” Austin recalled on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/em>.  “I was just trying to remember who I was, I was trying to remember what I liked to do. All I thought about was Elvis for three years.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge progressed when Austin was cast as a South Dakotan pilot for the WWII TV series Masters of the Air<\/em>, in which his character required a completely different accent to Elvis’s Mississippi twang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austin continued: “I had a dialect coach just to help me not sound like Elvis in that film, that was the whole thing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voice coach Ashley Howard<\/a> spoke exclusively to HELLO! about the change: “When you hear in subsequent interviews having wrapped up the Elvis Presley film, actually what you notice in his voice is that it was a lot deeper. When I work with people, we can certainly help people to develop much deeper and resonant voices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But also we don’t know anything about that particular moment in Austin’s day or week, he might have had a really, really terrible cold and hacking cough, and that can make the vocal folds swell up, and then you get a real change in the pitch and the depth of the voice. His voice might be very tired again, so there’s loads of factors that can influence someone’s voice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Millie Bobby Brown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Millie moved from Bournemouth in the UK to Florida when she was just eight years old. She developed an accent blending British and American tones, partly influenced by her role in Stranger Things<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ashley explained the reason behind the change. He said: “Having a more depth in your voice as an actor offers you more vocal versatility for being a storyteller. So, you know. So that’s maybe one of the motivations for doing that. And with Millie Bobby Brown, she grew up in the States, but her parentage has links back to Europe and the UK. And so she is trans-Atlantic. Millie is mobile in her voice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was echoed by Millie: “So I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America. I come to set and I’m an actor and I adapt, and so I want to mimic people,” Millie explained during an interview with content creator Max Balegde<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I can’t help that when I’m around my fianc\u00e9, or when I’m around people like Jimmy Fallon, who have a very American accent, I want to replicate it,” she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And now I’m in England, I wanna replicate that! And I’m sorry if it offends you. But listen, I’m trying my best!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only need to look at her recent Instagram reels to notice her accent is very different from videos captured during her early career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essex-born Victoria grew up in Hertfordshire, which earned her the nickname ‘Posh’ while in the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her husband David has also called her out on her “dodgy accent”, to which she replied: “That’s just how I speak.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taylor Swift\u2019s accent has subtly evolved alongside her music. The star has switched from a Tennessee twang to a more neutral American accent following her rise to fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers at the University of Chester found her earlier country songs featured a Southern American twang, while her pop music leaned toward a neutral American accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researchers commented on the shift, saying: “While there is clear evidence of accent shift between the two genres for all the accent sounds investigated, our results reveal that the shift between the genres is more subtle than we had hypothesised, with Swift using less perceptible Southern accent forms in her country area, rather than some of the features that index (are very recognisable in) a Southern American accent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another academic commented: “These results suggest that Swift is not performing the accent simply for her music but indicate a form of bi-linguilism, with some linguistic awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The changes could be attributed to a range of factors including her emersion into the Nashville\/South American English speech community, having moved to Nashville at the age of 14, and they could also carry some social meaning about ‘countryness’, youth culture and lack of pretension.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madonna<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“I didn’t know what anyone was talking about until I heard old interviews of myself,” she said, addressing the London crowd during her 2020 Madame X tour. “And then I was horrified and flabbergasted. Why did you let me do that to myself? I’m from Michigan!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It goes back and forth because I grew up in both places,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
