Yet his all-or-nothing attitude extended far beyond separating the Church of England from the Pope \u2013 or indeed his wives\u2019 heads from their bodies \u2013 and into all other aspects of his kingship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One particularly noteworthy manifestation was his love of a good old party, for Henry was the most hedonistic of monarchs. In 1509, he spent almost a whole year&#8217;s worth of tax, about \u00a313.5 million in today&#8217;s money, just on Christmas celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HELLO! visited Hampton Court Palace to speak to Tudor expert Professor Anthony Musson, head of research at Historic Royal Palaces, to learn about how King Henry would have celebrated Christmas Day, and how he managed to spend all that money\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Morning Mass<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the religious observances of the time, Henry\u2019s Christmas morning saw him processing in crimson robes towards the Chapel Royal to attend Mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-455083339-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-455083339-1.jpg 683w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-455083339-1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Chapel Royal in Hampton Court Palace played host to the religious aspects of Henry&#8217;s Christmas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He would hear this Mass in the \u2018Holy Day closet\u2019 in the upper part of the chapel, affording him more privacy than other attendees. It was one of the rare occasions when Henry took communion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 12 July 1543, in the Queen&#8217;s Closet at Hampton Court Palace, Henry married his sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Last-minute decorations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As he processed throughout the palace, Henry was greeted with Tudor Christmas decorations made up of more natural greenery like holly, ivy and mistletoe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homes weren\u2019t decorated until Christmas Eve as it was considered bad luck to begin the preparations any earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"756\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-466649281-1024x756.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-466649281-1024x756.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-466649281-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-466649281-768x567.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-466649281-1536x1134.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-466649281-2048x1512.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Christmas at Hampton Court Palace looks very different today<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food and feasting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A substantial part of King Henry&#8217;s vast expenditure came from feasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got some surviving menus from the 29th and 30th of December 1529 for when Henry was entertaining,\u201d said Anthony. \u201cThey&#8217;re three courses of about 14 or 15 dishes each, involving hings like swan, venison, various types of pies and pasties, heron, lark, pheasants and rabbits.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given his portly stature in later life, unsurprisingly Henry really enjoyed his puddings. \u201cHe particularly liked quince tart which often features on his menus and, of course, plenty of wine and ale to drink,&#8221; said Anthony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-929235496-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-929235496-1.jpg 740w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-929235496-1-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Feasting was a huge aspect of court life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Guy Walters, who presented <em>Castles: Britain\u2019s Fortified History<\/em>, estimated that King Henry&#8217;s meat bill in a year would have come to \u00a33.5 million in today&#8217;s money, while the drinks bill would be around \u00a36 million as the Tudors preferred wine and ale to often-polluted water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Banquets involved large quantities of ox, mutton, pork, beef and venison accompanied by 600,000 gallons of beer, coming to a staggering total of \u00a35.8 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And let\u2019s not forget the famed Tudor Christmas pie which consisted of a chicken stuffed inside a goose stuffed inside a turkey, encased in a &#8216;coffin&#8217; of pastry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the actual Christmas Day celebrations, there were feasts held almost every day across the period between Christmas and the Twelfth Night \u2013 an expensive time for the King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Fish Fridays\u2019!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While we in the modern world might not think it unusual to have fish and chips on a Friday (maybe more of a UK tradition than for our friends across the pond), we would all likely baulk at the prospect of fish for Christmas dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-1437052296-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-1437052296-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-1437052296-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-1437052296-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The new Christmas dinner?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not so in Henry\u2019s England where if Christmas fell on a Friday, the enormous royal kitchen would be set to work preparing a vast array of fish to make up the Christmas banquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gift-giving and charity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It may surprise you to learn that our tradition of Christmas Day gift-giving was not replicated by the Tudors. Opting instead for delayed gratification, they gave their gifts on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much significance was given to presents, especially those given or received by the King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"781\" src=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-51246604-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-51246604-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-51246604-1-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flatplan-plus-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-51246604-1-768x586.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Henry received gifts from common people and nobles alike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In 1545, when Henry was staying here at Hampton Court on Christmas Eve, he personally adjourned parliament and then made a speech complaining that everyone should be much more charitable,&#8221; said Anthony. &#8220;So his Christmas message, as it were, was to be charitable towards everyone.&#8221; Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard would likely have rolled their eyes at this directive, had their heads still been attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the nobility would give presents to their servants, the gift giving wasn\u2019t all one way. Indeed, everyday people would also give Henry gifts like chickens, wax, cheese and apples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gifts he decided to accept or reject were a barometer of how much he favoured the giver. Part of the Twelfth Night celebrations involved a cake, which had a bean baked into it. Whoever found the bean in the cake would be dubbed the Lord of Misrule or King of the Bean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were plays performed as well as masquerades, with King Henry particularly fond of masked mimes \u2013 and disguises in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In 1540 he decided to surprise Anne of Cleves with a visit. She had journeyed from Cleves in Germany to Rochester, where Henry decided that he would appear in disguise. It also shows just how different our modern monarchies are, comparing the low-key Sandringham Christmases enjoyed by British royals to the multi-million pound extravaganza put on by
