Jennifer Aniston

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

After two years of marriage, 12 years together, and six kids, the world was shocked in 2016 when Angelina Jolie filed from divorce from Brad Pitt, citing ‘irreconcilable differences.’ Court documents later revealed that Jolie, 49, alleged Pitt, 60, had drunkenly attacked her and her children during a trip on their private plane. It was reported that an argument had escalated, with the couple’s adopted son, Maddox, 22, stepping in.

In 2021, Jolie opened up about her split in a Vogue interview, saying ‘It was the right decision.’ In the years since, the couple – who met on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith in 2004, while the actor was still married to Jennifer Aniston, 55 – have been embroiled in abuse allegations, claims of forced NDAs, and a battle over their French Vineyard, dubbed the War of the Rosés. More recently, two of the couple’s children, Shiloh and Vivienne, made the choice to remove their father’s name from their surname.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp

When Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp after one year of marriage, no one expected the media frenzy that followed.

In 2016 Heard, 38, filed for divorce and obtained a temporary restraining order after alleging that Depp, 61, had been abusive when under the influence of drugs and alcohol. A $7 million (£5 million) settlement was reached out of court in the August – which Heard pledged at the time to donate to charity.

In December 2018, Heard wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post, ‘I became a public figure representing domestic abuse.’ The article prompted Depp to sue Heard for $50 million (£38 million), arguing defamation.

Heard countersued Depp for $100 million (£77 million) in 2021, with live streams of the court case spanning the globe. Ultimately, the Jury found both Depp and Heard were liable for defaming each other. While Depp thanked the jury for ‘giving me my life back,’ Heard described the result as ‘a setback’ for women.

Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen

After meeting in 2000 and marrying two years later, Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards seemed the picture of happiness. However, just months before welcoming their second child in 2005, Richards filed for divorce, citing Sheen’s drug abuse, anger management issues, and gambling as the reason.

A bitter custody battle ensured over the couple’s two daughters, with the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 53, later filing for a restraining order. Sheen, 58, then took to X (then known as Twitter) to hit back at Denise, calling her the ‘worst mom alive,’ and writing ‘see you in court you evil terrorist.’

Despite their rocky end, there’s now no bad blood between the two. Nearly two decades after their divorce, Sheen said last year, ‘[Me and Denise] are absolutely friendly. We went through so much sh*t together that I don’t think either one of us has any energy left to be divisive.’

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis

When Don’t Worry Darling was released in 2022, there was only one thing garnering more attention than the film itself: director Olivia Wilde’s love life.

Wilde had been in a relationship with actor Jason Sudeikis for nine years, getting engaged in 2013 and welcoming two children together. The couple announced their split in 2022 – and the director, 40, soon struck up a romance with Harry Styles, 30, who she met on set.

What ensued was a long custody battle – starting with Wilde being served papers while onstage at a CinemaCon. Jason reportedly alleged in later documents that he never intended for the director to receive the papers at the conference, requesting she be served them at Heathrow Airport. Shortly after, the couple’s nanny gave an interview to the Mail Online in one instance that Wilde had made her ‘special salad dressing’ for pop star Harry – leaving Sudeikis so upset that he tried lying under her car to stop her from leaving.

The former couple then released a joint statement, hitting back at what they described as ‘false and scurrilous accusations.’

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner

Hearts broke last year when former Disney darling Joe Jonas and Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner announced they were calling it quits. The couple – who tied the knot in 2019 in Las Vegas – wrote in a joint statement that the breakup was ‘amicable.’

However, things quickly turned sour. Reports emerged claiming that Jonas, 34, was caring for the couple’s two young daughters alone, citing Turner’s ‘party lifestyle’ as the reason for the split. Pictures soon surfaced on Jonas out with his daughters, despite the couple’s previous attempts to protect their privacy.

Turner, 28, hit back by suing Jonas in order to move their daughters from their US home and back to the UK. The star later backtracked on the move, withdrawing a complaint of ‘child abduction.’

In court documents, Turner alleged that ‘the breakdown [of the marriage] happened quickly,’ revealing that she learnt Jonas was filing for divorce ‘through the media.’ Jonas denied this.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Once Hollywood’s ‘it’ couple, the world was shocked in 2012 when Katie Holmes filed from divorce from Top Gun actor Tom Cruise after six years of marriage – leaving everyone wondering what went wrong.

While the split was sudden and initially went smoothly, it was later alleged that Holmes, 45, split from Cruise, 62, for fear that the actor would bring their child Suri into the Church of Scientology. Cruise has been a scientologist since 1989, now being an outspoken advocate for the controversial church. Holmes was granted primary custody of Suri in their divorce, although Cruise was given plenty of visitation time.

Holmes later opened up about her 2012 move to New York following her divorce, saying, ‘That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped me out.’

Firerose and Billy Ray Cyrus

When Billy Ray Cyrus married Firerose – who is 27 years his junior – the world was shocked. Even more shocking was their sudden divorce in May, just seven months after saying ‘I do.’

After filing for divorce Cyrus, 62, quickly request a temporary restraining order to keep Firerose from accessing his money. According to reports, the star had racked up nearly $97,000 (£75,058) on Cyrus’ credit cards – with Firerose’s team reportedly counter-arguing that she was simply living ‘as per the status quo during the marriage.’ That same month, Firerose alleged Cyrus filed for divorce just one day before she was set to undergo preventative double-mastectomy surgery, something she was forced to delay ‘indefinitely’ without Cyrus’ health insurance. Hitting back, Cyrus then accused Firerose of hiding a previous marriage.

Opening up during an interview with Page Six, Firerose branded Cyrus an ‘evil man,’ saying, ‘‘This is a smear campaign by the person I was deeply in love with for four years [and] who has decided to wage full blown war against me.’

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

While Gwen Stefani is now happily loved-up with country singer Blake Shelton, her love story has been far from smooth. Back in 2015, the ‘Hollaback Girl’ singer, 54, split from Gavin Rossdale, 58, after 20 years together. Rumours soon swirled that the couple, who shared two children together, had split following infidelity from Rossdale.

Opening up about his split, the Bush frontman later called it his ‘simplest shame.’ According to sources, Rossdale had been having an affair with one of the couple’s nannies for several years, with the cheating only coming to light after another nanny found explicit photos and texts on the family iPad. Admitting the divorce left her life ‘falling apart,’ Stefani reflected last year, ‘when that happened, I had to literally start over again. It was a reset of my life.’

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James

Although the words ‘scandal’ and ‘Sandra Bullock’ don’t usually go hand in hand, the Practical Magic star was caught in the headlights back in 2010 thanks to the actions of her then-husband, Jesse James. Five years into his marriage with Bullock, 59, multiple women came forward claiming they had been involved in affairs with James, 55 – with the couple soon divorcing.

Although James dubbed the ‘vast majority of allegations untrue and unfounded,’ in a public apology, he said, ‘There is only one person to blame for this whole situation, and that is me. It’s because of my poor judgement that I deserve everything bad that is coming my way.’

In a 2017 interview, James admitted to cheating on Bullock, saying ‘I stood up and took accountability for it and apologised.’ He added, ‘In general, both women and men cheat. It’s part of life.’

Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner

Christine Baumgartner filed from divorce from Kevin Costner in May 2023 after 18 years of marriage, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the culprit behind their separation.

A lengthy divorce case took place, with court documents later revealing that Baumgartner, 50, was reportedly seeking $248,000 (£191,901) in monthly child support payments. At the time, Baumgartner was also still living in the couple’s California beachfront home, which Costner claimed was in breach of their prenuptual agreement.

In February, their divorce was settled – with both parties agreeing to joint custody of their three children. Costner, 69, later opened up about his divorce, saying ‘That’s a crushing moment. It’s powerful. It hurt, but I go forward. I can’t wilt like a daisy. I have to continue to be who I am, and keep a special eye on who [my children] are.’
