Catherine, Princess of Wales is known for tapping into one of winter’s boldest trends: red coats. Most recently, however, Catherine turned to her favourite and ye-old-faithful scarlet coat for her annual Together At Christmas carol service – radiating festive charm in a bespoke Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen coat.

She’s been spotted in this exact coat numerous times since its initial debut back in 2020, this time featuring a black velvet bow tie at the neckline – an unexpected nod to the late Princess Diana, who often donned the same shade of pillar box, with similar black ribbon. The coat’s red hue paid both a homage to the season and the royal penchant for symbolic dressing, and was accessorised with pearl drop earrings and Ralph Lauren suede knee-high boots.

In 2022, Catherine looked particularly festive in a ruby red coat from LK Bennett. Who can blame her either – when the weather turns cold, a red coat is one of the best coats around.

Perhaps she had a closely trained eye on that year’s autumnal catwalks that make for appropriate autumn coats – Bianca Saunders, Dior, Eudon Choi, Gabriela Hearst, Prada and Tommy Hilfiger all showed resplendent red as part of their collections – but what’s more likely is that they looked to the Princess of Wales.
Catherine, you see, has a well-documented soft spot for red outerwear, favouring stunningly bright dress coats that ensure she stands out during public outings. It also seems that she tends to opt for a tailored coat, and who can blame her as they are the perfect coat as we near towards the end of the year.
