A-list star issues shock statement to fans after brutal fighting
The Grammys snub didn’t go down well
Words by Georgia Aspinall

Remember the days when the most intense thing a fan could do is pitch a tent outside a celebrities hotel or follow their tour to multiple dates? Well, social media has taken that trend and amped it up tenfold. Now, when fans are feeling particularly fanatic, they take to their favourite app and start intense fights with other fan communities.
Seriously, it’s a thing. The Beyhive (Beyoncé’s fans) are constantly fighting Swifties (Taylor Swift’s fans) online – debating who the greatest popstar of all time really is – while lines have been drawn between Belieber’s (Justin Bieber’s fans) and Selenators (Selena Gomez’s fans) ever since their first breakup back in the 2010s. Now, the latter are often called out for their intense bullying of Bieber’s wife, Hailey.
That said, many celebrities now feel a duty to call their fanbase out on any inappropriate behaviour online – and Billie Eilish has never been one to take the practice lightly. Earlier this year, she called out toxic fan behaviour in an interview with Rolling Stone after the release of her Grammy-nominated album Hit Me Hard and Soft. After fans deduced that some of her songs were about particular exes she’d publicly dated, she said the reaction online was ‘intense.’
‘You can write a song about an experience that made you feel a type of way, and the internet is defending you or whatever, but suddenly it becomes this vicious [thing],’ Eilish said. ‘People are cruel. ‘Oh, my God, this person is horrible. They deserve to die. We need to ruin this person’s life, because they made Billie feel this way.’ And I wish that it wasn’t like that. I really do.’

Now, her brother Finneas has taken to Instagram to call fans out again – this time after the singer was ‘snubbed’ by the Grammys. Eilish, who produces all of her music with her brother, was nominated for seven awards but left emptyhanded.
In particular, she was up album of the year, best pop vocal album, song of the year (for birds of a feather) as well as record of the year, best group performance (for Guess with Charli XCX) and best dance pop recording (for L’Amour De Ma Vie) and best pop solo performance.
Who won in those categories? You’ll have heard about Beyonce winning album of the year for Cowboy Carter, but Sabrina Carpenter won best pop vocal album for Short N Sweet, Kendrick Lamar won song and record of the year with Not Like Us as well as best music video, while Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars won best group performance for Die with a Smile. Charli XCX beat out Eilish on the best dance pop recording (with Von Dutch) as did Carpenter with Espresso for best pop solo performance.
Given the list of illustrious names up for the awards this year, it’s perhaps less surprising that Eilish didn’t make her usual clean sweep (she has nine Grammys currently) but that doesn’t mean fans weren’t fuming. Many took to social media to share their frustration over who deserved what award, trolling other artists in the process. In fact, some shared videos of Eilish looking emotional at the award show despite the fact she was often reacting to seeing her favourite artists, like Beyoncé, win awards they’ve waited years for. As such, Finneas was quick to put fans in check.
‘Be at peace’
‘Great Grammys!!!’ Finneas said on Instagram. ‘So honoured to have been nominated amongst so many amazing songs/ albums. I don’t want to see ANYONE with a photo of me or Billie as their PFP getting’ in fights with other artists’ fans in comment sections!!! Be at peace! Congratulations to all!!’
Fans reacted with shock to the statement, but heeded Finneas’ warning and fighting between fandoms has since calmed down. Honestly, it’s commendable they – who let’s be honest, are quite the musical duo – feel so strongly about protecting other artists from toxic fan culture and creating a more supportive environment for people to boldly love any artists without resorting to criticising others to show said support.
We need more artists like Billie and Finneas, able to call out the negatives while still remaining grateful to the fans that have loved them since their start.
