I tried the comfy M&S trainers everyone loves – they’re selling fast
Evidently, Mary Jane trainers are this season’s best trend.

When it comes to footwear, I’ve always loved my Mary Janes for a delicate flair, but I equally rely on my trainers for comfort. Until now, they’ve served two different purposes in my wardrobe. But lately, London’s well-dressed have been debuting an unexpected trainer trend, and with the Mary Jane trainer gaining popularity, it seems I no longer have to choose between charm and comfort.
At its core, the trend is yet another twist on the traditional trainer, reinterpreting the sporty staple in a traditionally feminine silhouette to soften athletic design without losing practicality, making it more wearable and more desirable. Naturally, brands like Nike, Puma, Onitsuka Tiger and Adidas have all tapped in, and now the high street has followed suit with a pair that very well could be the most chic and wearable of them all. And, unsurprisingly, it comes courtesy of Marks & Spencer.
M&S’ Suede Mary Jane Trainers lean less sporty, still resembling a true Mary Jane, just a more outgoing version. It makes the trend accessible while maintaining an elevated, feminine finish that fits seamlessly into everyday wardrobes. The silhouette retains a sporty foundation, grounded by a comfortable flat sole, but is elevated by the Mary-Jane-inspired strap with a secure riptape fastening. Subtle decorative stitching and contrast trims along the cleanly shaped edges add considered detail without overwhelming the design.
Styling options are endless. They work with tailored trousers and denim, as well as shorts, skirts and dresses. It’s an ideal pre-spring shoe and will easily carry through summer. I’ll be wearing mine paired with a suede tote or a blazer. It’s also perfect for travelling, essentially a two-in-one shoe. They still have the femininity you love in the original Mary Janes, but feel more outgoing and quietly directional. They’re still in stock for now, but will definitely be gone over the weekend, so shop it while you still can.
