Kate Winslet’s daughter Mia Threapleton has said it’s a ‘misconception’ that she’s a nepo baby. An actress like her mother, she got her big break performing alongside Kate in the Channel 4 drama I Am Ruth, where the pair played mother and daughter. Now she’s starring in the New Wes Anderson film, The Phoenician Scheme, as Sister Liesl, alongside Michael Cera, Scarlet Johansson and Tom Hanks.
Mia told the Mail that she wasn’t introduced to acting when she was young. ‘I feel like it’s a misconception about me, considering who my mother is, that I grew up going to set or that I would know anything about this world because of her and what she does,’ she said.
‘That is not the case at all. I genuinely can count on not even two hands the amount of times I went to set as a kid. There were never scripts lying around the house.’
Mia, who is 24, goes by her father’s surname. He is the film director Jim Threapleton, known for Extraordinary Rendition and The Mummy. She also won the Breakout Artist Award during the Newport Beach Film Festival UK & IE Honours 2025 earlier this year, and is currently starring in the popular Apple TV+ series The Buccaneers, of based on the Edith Wharton novel.

A synopsis for the upcoming series reads: ‘Sent to secure husbands and titles, young American women explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash.’
In 2021, Mia’s Oscar-winning mother, star of Titanic and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, shared that her daughter had landed her first film during an ITV’s Lorraine interview. She said since she went by her father’s surname, she was hired just on her merit.
‘So she slipped under the radar and the people who cast her had absolutely no idea that she was my daughter … that was important for her self-esteem, of course,’ she said.
It also wasn’t a total surprise that her daughter was keen to become an actor. In the same interview, she added that she actually ‘suspected’ it would happen.
‘I genuinely can count on not even two hands the amount of times I went to set as a kid’
‘This isn’t the first time Mia has spoken about her upbringing, with her telling Variety: ‘I never actually spent much time around sets that my mum was working on. It was always a special treat. It’s a very different experience when it is happening to you, and not just something I was getting to observe from time to time.
‘I really understand why my mum has always impressed on us how hard the work is. She is right! And I loved every second of it.’
Winslet welcomed her daughter Mia in 2000. Three years later she had her son her son Joe Alfie Mendes with ex-husband Sam Mendes, and in 2013 had her second son, Bear Blaze with husband Edward Abel Smith.
In 2022, she shared that Mia and Joe’s favourite film of hers was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. ‘So regularly, I’ll hear from someone’s bedroom, Beck blasting. I’ll be like, ‘That’s Eternal Sunshine’. So that’s kind of amazing,’ she told People.
Winslet has been impressed about her daughter’s acting abilities too. Speaking on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, she shared that she was ‘blown away’ by Mia’s performance in I am Ruth, adding that Mia ‘didn’t need my help at all’.
‘Sometimes I could introduce her to a technical trick here and there,’ she went on. ‘Just little things I picked up along the way, like changing an eye line … Little things like that, that no one teaches you. And she appreciated that stuff.’
I am Ruth went on to win a TV BAFTA for best single drama in 2023, while Winslet also won the best leading actress award for her performance.
The family might birth more actors it seems too. During a 2021 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Winslet shared that her then seven-year-old Bear shared he wanted to be an ‘actress’.
‘The other day my son was very funny. He turned to me and said, “Mum, I’ve got a confession to make’. He said, “I’m just gonna come out with it. I’m just gonna say it”,’ she said.‘He looks at me and says, “I want to be an actress”,’ to which she and Kimmel burst out laughing.
She went on to say her son did not find her reaction amusing and stressed: ‘It’s not funny, I want to be an actress. Sign me up.’
